Have you connected your reader and authorised that as well? They both have to be authorised separately! |

I had to shut everything down, then connect my reader, then open Adobe DE to authorise my reader.
If you can do that, I would then shut everything down before opening up calibre (you shouldn't need to, but it might help). Then you need to find the book where ADE has saved it, not where you originally saved it when you downloaded it, to import the book into calibre. However, if you are having problems with calibre, if you can get ADE to recognise your reader, it will appear as a shelf in ADE and you can move the book onto your reader there instead of using calibre. It might help you get started reading the book quicker! |

If it helps, I downloaded and installed ADE about 3 times before I worked all this out, but since it all started working I haven't had any problems at all.
It is all worth it in the end. |

When I first download it, it's not recognised as a pdf. After you've opened it with ADE it will be saved as a PDF.

Not sure what to suggest now.
Have you got calibre working? Does that detect your reader? If you have books that don't have DRM (eg from MobileRead or other free sites) you can treat your reader like a memory card or hard drive and transfer files onto your reader that way. You could also try posting onto the main Sony 500/505 forum and asking if other mac users can help you as they may know something easy that will sort things out for you. Sorry it didn't work! |

For this exercise we will ignore Calibre and only use ADE. You previously stated that ADE has been installed and registered on your Mac. Make sure that the Sony Reader is also registered to the same account that you used to register your Mac. When ADE is open, plug in your Reader and the menus should provide some option to register the Reader. Also, look on the left of the ADE screen and the Sony Reader 505 should be listed as an attached device. Now, I'm assuming the book downloaded from Fictionwise is saved somewhere on your computer. Assuming that all of the above registering has been completed, you should be able to use the menus in ADE and add the book to the ADE library. Obviously, you will need to know where the book is saved on your computer. If everything works correctly, the book will show up in ADE complete with title, author, publisher and any other information coded into the ebook. Once the book is loaded into ADE, I would first recommend opening the viewer to verify the ebook can at least be read using the ADE software. If all is working so far then it is a simple click on the title of the ebook then drag it to the Sony Reader listed on the left in ADE and drop to the device. ADE will probably show a progress bar for copying the file to the Reader and this will only display for a few seconds. Now simply close down ADE and disconnect the Reader from your computer. I am unsure if you need to perform a certain action to disconnect a device from a Mac. Once you then start up your Reader the file should be there and ready to read. I don't have my computer in front of me but will re-check some of these steps and make changes when I get home. The Sony 505 is a very good device but requires a few extra steps versus a Kindle. If you decide these steps are not worth it there is nothing wrong with choosing a device that better suits your needs. |

nuttmegg--I'm pretty sure that you'll need access to a Windows machine to authorize your reader to your ADE account. From posts I've read here, this is a one time deal, but unfortunately it does need to be done under Windows. This might be what's causing you problems.
Hope you can get it sorted! dordale ![]() |

grooks,
i got the calibre on my mac to accept an EPUB file in the library and got it to transfer to my PRS-505; however, now i'm having a difficult time adding a PDF file to my device. Shouldn't i be able to add the PDF the same way i added the EPUB? |

Yes, although I've never tested Calibre with a DRM PDF file. I've only used non-DRM PDF and Calibre.

One hint that may make ADE easier to use when downloading epubs and pdfs. Not sure if it works this way on Mac, but it's sure better on Windows.
Have Digital Editions open. Download your book, but when the interim box allowing "save" or "open" appears, choose "open" This should open the ebook in ADE, and you should see it "authorizing" it. This also "saves" the ebook at the same time in the folder my documents\my digital editions. You can then drag it to your ereader or Calibre. cheers |

Which E-Book Reader is the best?
I am hoping to purchase an e-book reader soon but there are a lot of confusing reviews. Is it just a matter of personal choice or are there some good and bad ones? |
