Why imagine it? We know it's a $75k per model fee for Adobe Mobile 9.

Doesn't seem much - compared with the current retail price of a DX.

Maybe Amazon is resistant to using/loading any software not under their control?
Makes one think about their on-going cooperation/coalition with Apple and the iPhone apps.

It's a matter of control. Amazon doesn't want to support anything they don't have full control over. So in order to "say" they support PDF, they've limited it to the barest features needed to be able to "say" they support PDF. And as far as DRMed PDF go, that won't happen since Amazon doesn't sell them. And you can forget about an updated to ever support ePub. If Amazon doesn't sell it, they don't want to support it. I think PDF was grudgingly added to the DX.

For the textbook market only, no doubt.

A big advantage of the Kindle is the ability to research any word or topic while reading. With a few clicks and a short wait one is connected directly to Wikipedia or Google. After researching on the net, one click and you are back to your original book page.

With the Irex, a dictionary lookup involves both picking up and putting down the stylus. That would be a hassle for me considering the device is heavy enough to often require two hands for holding.

Here is a grid comparison of the 2 devices but not hands on.

It would be great if one of the US DR owners would make use of Amazon's 30 day return policy and do a real side by side comparison with the DX.

If you've got the device on a desk, that's no problem at all. If I'm holding it, I "cradle" it in one arm, and use the stylus with the other hand.

Amazon has a mobile ADE licence, see Kindle DX: Adobe the real winner? and Amazon, Others License Adobe Reader Mobile SDK. So, assuming Amazon is actually using Adobe code for PDFs, it is very strange that the KDX does not support the table of contents and hyperlinks, and also that it does not reflow PDFs.

They can also license from FoxIt like Jetbook does. I assume they are licensing the current code from someone? Or do you think they wrote their own?

Does the Kindle DX have an "About" screen which list all the "legal stuff"? There may be a clue in there about who the PDF viewer was licensed from. I very much doubt that Amazon wrote it themselves.

The DX's "credits" should show whether or not it contains code licensed from Adobe. I would imagine it would be acknowledged on whatever screen it is that shows all the copyright stuff.
