let's hope you right. Seems to be overkill for a card that does exactly whay paypal does, and they don't want anything. I just want to be careful and not be ripped off.

No, but I had to verify my credit card with the "Verified by Visa" system. I think that this level of security is not unreasonable given that they are a debit card. I think I had to do something similiar to verify my PayPal account/credit cards. So far, but it is still early days yet, it has worked with the Sony ebook store. Just wished it also worked for the iTunes store but unfortunately not!

You answered my next question already, Itunes. To trick them and Amazon you will probably need a card from a US bank, entropay is European. Maybe they have them on a blacklist. Still trying to get my bank to issue one from their US branch for me. If that doesn't work and we can't find any other entity like Entropay that we can trust then only a US friend can help. Or those gift cards.

What is life without its little challenges! If you ever find a way round that problem, do let us know.

gift cards

Can't you buy the giftcards for itunes online?

It seems weird to me that in thiss day and age that there would be any issue with credit card processing. I suppose in some countries it might make sense that there would be an issue, but for someone who lives in the EU?

From what I have heard Paypal seems the best work around for the credit card issue.

Giftcards have been like lotteries for me. If you're lucky, the guy selling them is honest and does not cheat or use stolen credit cards. The resellers know that the buyers are non-US customers and will have limited recourse if conned. I've experienced a couple of such occasions and it wasn't fun. PayPal is next to useless in these matters; it considers the sale of giftcards as services. Since no physical goods are involved, they don't want to know.

Having joined this community, I know that disney_mummy is willing to buy Sony giftcards for us. Now, I just need to find one for iTunes!

I can get a US credit card from the US branch of my bank, problem now is the US mailing address. I have some US friends, but I do not want them to get any bank mail from me. And the bank doesn't hold mail. The only reliable service I have found costs 35$ a month, far more than it is worth for holding my mail and forwarding it once every 3 months or so. At least we are getting closer.

Giftcards for iTunes won't work in all instances. For example, you can't get some iphone/ipod touch applications, even if they are free without the credit card. And have you tried it, can a non US resident use gift cards at the US iTunes store?

I haven't had any problems getting free apps from the appstore on the US iTunes store. I definitely have no US credit card entered in the store, only have used gift cards. Have been using gift cards for the last 3 years. My problem has always been finding reliable sources of gift cards. Since finding this forum, I know where and who to go to for Sony Connect store ones, just need to find iTunes store now.

what have you used for the initial registration? the first time you use an ID to access the store you are asked for credit card info, even if you don't buy anything.

It's not credit card processing that's the problem. Most publishers place geographic restrictions as to where their books can be sold, so if you're trying to buy an e-book that the store only has rights to sell in the US, you'll need a credit card with a US address to do it.
