I'm ignorant too! They replied to me last month pretty promptly - i hadn't tried putting a ticket in before that (only had my iLiad this year). Do you mean parts rather than service/queries? Or another product - i have the Book Edition.

iRex have not "dropped support" of the iLiad. They have stopped new development work on it, but the product is still "supported" - they will repair it if you break it, etc. It's normal for companies to stop development on one product when they bring out a successor. Eg, Sony have not issued any firmware updates for the PRS-500 since the PRS-505 was released.

I would imagine they'd have to make it competitively priced with a Tablet PC, or else it wouldn't be economically viable.

I'd take the date with a grain of salt, as I always do when companies are just making PR type announcements about products that don't really exist yet, but it's nice to see they're working on it. |

A lot of people complain about their software development (mostly due to them being a really small company), but iRex's core competency is in their engineering. People tend to forget that iRex works very closely with E-Ink and PVI behind the scenes. Most of the first generation ebook readers (Sony PRS-500, Kindle, etc) all had iRex display controllers inside them.

It sounds like they're working on a new technology though. Pixel Qi and Fujitsu Flepia were both variations on LCD. Liquavista is using electrowetting. Based on the iRex announcement, it sounds like they have a new approach for adding color to electrophoretic displays, which is what current eInk is based on. I don't think any of the announcements for color epaper displays I've seen so far have been based on eInk.

hehe, 2011 sounds very enthusiastic. Although they have the skill in displayand controller technology. And i think they can pull it off. But i really hope they get a few good merketing and sales guys and sell their display and controller technology to other manufacturers. Then we might see the amazon kindle DXCM 2011

and it will only cost...
...too much based on Irex's track record - the Kindle DX may not have a touch screen but even the vaporware Reader without the touchscreen was slated to be significantly more than the DX - I know these things are expensive to produce - I just dont see how Irex can survive two more years with basically no content revenue and the most expenisive devices on the market
My prediction (sorry guys) is that they won't survive to release it... |

That's also how they're able to have "unique" screen sizes being made by PVI. The iLiad was 8" when everyone else could only get 6" screens. The DR is 10.1" when everyone else will get the 9.7" screen. iRex is designing their own custom controllers for their devices, in addition to the 6" controller that they designed for most of the other first gen devices.

Why this announcement? Could it be because they were the first to offer a big screen ereader but they know they won't be the first to offer a colour ereader? They're pratically saying "hey! wait for us! don't buy any colour ereader yet, ours will use a different and better technology!" |
