Amazon does make you pay return shipping on anything that you return because you don't like it. I can live with that.
Its only fair, and keeps the costs down. Why should they pay for return shipping when I didn't like the product?

However, anything defective? They not only send you a label, but ship a replacement immediately and give you 30 days to send them back the defective item.

I already ordered mine. Expecting it on the 11'th. I'm a satisfied Sony prs505 user and would not have considered a Kindle 2 but the 9 inch screen lured me.

From what I've read and seen (vidoes) of the software, it's not yet ready. It doesn't support ePub, and no PDF ToC. So for me, it's a no brainer to wait for someone else to do it better.

Since the software is upgradeable and Amazon wants to target the educational market this fall I'm really hoping that the software improves so the PDF support really does become fully integrated on the DX and not just a slap-dash add-on.

I can certainly see the need for a large-screen device; I've just splashed out on an iRex DR1000S myself, and it's great - I can see the same size page I see in a printed book. Given Amazon's track record, there's no reason to suppose that the Kindle DX won't be an equally excellent device.

I've got Calibre so I can convert what I want to read to mobi format. No worries about epub. Insofar as PDF's it will handle them at least as well if not better than my PRS500 so that will be ok.

I do not plan to buy the DX, but I am very interested in the Plastic Logic device. The questions for me are which formats will it support and price. I fear that the price will be exorbitant because of the business-market focus and its touch screen. I'll be looking for the MobileRead reviews before making any decision.

When I first heard of it I was waiting to pre order it... then I got to thinking, well, the DX is larger --> not as portable as my K2 --> not a smart buy.
I take my K2 everywhere I go, even if I am pretty sure that I am not going to be able to get some reading in. It has almost become like security blanket for me. I dont think that I would be able to so the same with the DX

I don't think of large-screen devices as being replacements for 6" readers, but complimentary to them.

I could be wrong here, (please, I'm asking for more info here) but I don't think those who are into novels (mainly)are the same ones who will buy the DX.

It seems to be designed more for reading graphs, pdf's, and tables than a compact carry around device. A cool tool for college people, and those who are more into 'tech' stuff.

Yes, I know you can read anything on there, but the size itself seems to defeat the "tuck it into your purse, etc." aspect.

I look at it like this:
Kindle 2 = paperbook
Kindle DX = hardcover

in terms of reading ease.

I am looking forward to the DX/large screen model for a non-technical reason. I read a lot of poetry (and Shakespeare, etc.). On the smaller screens, I have to really ramp down text size to get the line breaks to occur in the "right places" -- i.e. where they would occur on the printed page. But my tired eyes want/need larger font sizes. It is unsettling to read well-known poetry and have line breaks occurring in the "wrong" places - as far as the metrics of the poem are concerned. I'm hoping either the larger screen size, or the landscape mode on the fly option, restores my poetic works to their more familiar appearance on the screen.
