My impression is that iRex is selling all the DR1000S's they can make. This is why they raised the initial price. It is just supply and demand. If their supply is limited, the KDX might not cause a price drop because it could raise demand for the DR1000S (given that it is more capable in several significant ways).

The DX is less capable and less capable for a device witha 9.7 inch screen should be. Amazon's software on the DX is known as crippleware.

There's no real reason to decrease DR1000's price at least on the European market.

Kindle DX is $489. If anyone from Europe wanted to buy it from the US, then s/he'd have to add VAT which is 20% on average in all European countries. So the real price for Europeans is about $590. You need to add customs duties, shipping and middleman's charges (like MyUS.com).

Oh, and Kindle's guarantee might be not valid outside the US.

DX is not a bargain, really.

There's no "might not be" about it. It isn't.

iRex seem to have done an excellent job of providing the DR with a rigid framework that is resistant to flexure. I've been unable to find a single report on MR of a broken DR screen. It remains to be seen how susseptible - or otherwise - the Kindle DX is to screen breakage.

Have you seen these? http://www.netronixinc.com/product_e-book.htm
Haven't heard about this brand - they are releasing a 9.7" device in Q1 2010.

Netronix does not generally sell directly to consumers. They make the hardware in the Bookeen Cybook Gen3, the PocketBooks (PocketBook 360° final design), the new Cool-er, and the upcoming Astak Mentor line. So Netronix devices with a 9.7" screen will likely be available from multiple vendors.

What do you mean? The page says:

Quote:
Pre-orders placed prior to June 5th will begin shipping on June 10th. New pre-orders will be prioritized on a first come, first served basis. Pre-order today and your Kindle DX will ship in approximately 7 to 10 days.

I realize they are small, however, judging from the level of interest in e.g. xjournal, you would think that they would focus a little more attention on using the devices as a two-way device (reading and writing).

At the very least, shipping and supporting a USB keyboard and some sort of decent app for that; something the Kindle cannot do.

Has anyone noticed that on the website the DR1000 and Iliad are out of stock now? Is that just because they don't sell to the US anymore or do they have something new coming down the pike?

Cool, its probably just the US shipping issue that was discussed in other threads. Thanks
