We've a bin and we've a heap.
The bin is rather full, we should be able to remove some compost from it this summer. The heap is mostly grass atm, it started when we bought our first lawn mower (which was in April somewhere while we bought the house in October. The grass was very long by then and too much to put in our container (a green one for green stuff and a gray one for general garbage). So, we threw it on a heap. And it's been there ever since ![]() |

I use a Swedish made tumbler that I have on a wall inside our barn. Into goes all our kitchen waste, carbon is usually sawdust. Even in the depths of winter it reaches 25-35 degrees Celsius inside...the highest I've had it is 70 degrees ....
It wasn't cheap but it is extremely well insulated .... |

I've recently requested a composting bin, which we can get free through our local council (government). I think that should be enough for our needs at the moment.
If I need more, I can go out to the tip (garbage dump) where the council composts all the paper, card and garden waste that is collected each week. The compost is free to local residents and is quite good quality. I have noticed that the areas of the garden in which I have dug in council compost have far more worms than the areas which have store bought compost. |

I built my own bin.
http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/co...an/pallets.pdf Since I live on a farm, I always have stuff to compost. I really need to get a leaf/branch shredder. |

Yes, that was a very good acquisition... Small material goes on the heap (mostly grass though), larger branches in the garden hearth, and those smaller branches are shredded and put into the places where the bare clay is showing...

We got an attachment for the mower that double slices the grass and returns it directly to the lawn. The lawn has improved greatly since. After the tree triming this spring a bunch of us rented a chipper and made our own mulch. We will most likely do it again.

I compost, and have done so for years. you can do it small, it just takes longer! first and formost NO MEAT OR MEAT PRODUCTS!!!!!!!!!!!! also no dairy! (but eggshells are splendid!) citrus peels do not compost well, but virtually everything else in your kitchen will compost very nicely. many coffee shops actually will give away grounds which are nice in your compost. grass clippings and corn husks make a nice nuetralizer if you need it. occasionally adding lightweight cardboard or paper or newspaper with not much print on it can help dry out a wet compost. at home I have the ability to add dried horse manure occasionally (never add wet and NEVER add manure from a carnivore or omnivore). I also sometimes buy fishing worms and put them in.
