Aha but this wasn't stand-by. The screen was blank. The unit had gone off and I had to power it back on.

Yes, the screen goes blank in standby mode. It looks like it is off but it is not. It can actually stay that way for several days without actually being 'off'.

Usually, when mine goes into standby it displays a picture of the Eiffel Tower. And also, when it's in standby , all I need do is to give the power button a quick slide. In this case i had to go through the process as if i had shut down the reader.

Fortissimo, was your battery low? Here is some info on power management from the 950 User Guide. I assume the 650 is similar.

Power management operates as follows:
  • After 10 minutes of inactivity, the Reader enters the sleep mode automatically and battery consumption is minimized.
  • After three* days of inactivity, the Reader automatically shuts down and stops consuming battery power. * If battery power is at a low level, the Reader will shut down after 60 minutes of inactivity.

Thanks Bookworm Girl

I knew this question would be asked. Sorry I forgot to add that I had three bars left on my battery indicator. Most probably a fluke.
