And you still have not paid the demo price like everyone else. So, how can we ship you one?

Did you read the cited text? The letters explicitly said that a demo unit would be shipped without paying (I assume it would then have to be returned).

Wow.

I'm speechless.

How can Mr. B be so far off the mark? The hole he's digging just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Me thinks I will be taking a very wide berth around this Foxit company.

It is fairly common for people to be *loaned* review units by the company hoping for a review, yes. If the reviewer damages or loses the unit, the reviewer must pay for it, of course.

All you have to do is get known for writing thorough, factual, interesting reviews of new technology that a lot of people like to read, and you too can get lent free stuff. But be aware you usually have to fund your own startup costs (the review units for the reviews you write that spark such attention and build a following), that reviewing units and writing reports takes quite a bit of time, and that you usually don't get paid, or don't get paid much, for the time you spend, aside from your intrinsic pleasure in borrowing bleeding edge technology and learning and writing about it.

If it still sounds good to you--go for it! We could always use more people striving to write the best review.

Often they are loaned stuff but then they have to give it back. Occasionally some vendors provide a unit for free but that is usually a commitment for ongoing feedback beyond the original review.

I don't know what part of the e-mails said "free". We have inputted his order but we are still waiting for payment. Nate knows this already. Everyone on our media list has purchased a review unit except Nate.

The emails said he'd receive one after the paid orders were fulfilled. What part of that does not imply free?

If Foxit didn't mean to loan him a review unit, they should have said, 'sure, but it's $xxx.xx' at the time he asked. Not now, way after the fact. And you bringing the debate/misunderstanding *here* and flogging Nate is the most unprofessional behavior I've ever seen. Does your boss know you're doing this?

toy, camera and electronics review sites are regularly loaned new cameras, electronics and toys by the manufacturer - they rarely pay for them. the manufacturers who don't send items out don't get as many hands-on reviews - simple. generally each reviewer is given a certain amount of time with the items they are sent, then send them on to the next reviewer.

how do i know this? well, not only am i a great fan of review sites where they tell us about it, but one of my family members writes product reviews. i write reviews as part of my living - okay, i write pornsite reviews, but still honest and unbiased reviews. i know from my clients how valuable having product reviews can be, and considering that whenever i look up anything to do with ebooks on google, i find mobileread in the first 3 listings (often the first), i can't imagine a company not wanting to have their product listed here.

if eslick wanted a full unbiased review, they should have sent a review unit like other companies generally do. after all, it's great advertising AND they can improve their products when reviewed by reviewers who are both educated and experienced with similar products. and btw, the cost of the units is deductible as marketing if they're in the u.s. as it is, nate worked with what he had. and keep in mind that he didn't make stuff up - he listed his sources for his hands-off review, part of which was from the eslick forum.

i've rarely seen such poor PR, and such a complete lack of understanding of what great exposure and branding a review on a site like this - one, i might add, with tons of authority on google. it would well have been worth the cost of a single unit. as it is, many more eyes are on this board than the regular posters, and erik_b's comments don't make eslick look like a company i would want to do business with. as far as i can tell, he didn't even respond to SaraB's post https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...80&postcount=2

Well my hands on quasi review is in the 'other devices' section if you would like to read something based on experience rather than hearsay.

To be honest, I don't see the eSlick to be all that wonderful if all it does it display PDF on a 6" screen.
