It went great - thanks everyone for all of the support!

I did two 30 minute sessions on ereaders / ebooks to 16 year olds plus two sessions of 20 minutes to 12 years olds on "The Hobbit".

The interest on the ebook / ereaders was very high.

No one, not even the teachers, had seen an ereader device before :-)

The PDF which was a powerpoint, I used to back up my discussion rather than talk about what was just there.

I had two good Q&A's focused around DRM (J K Rowling etc), pricing, application in schools, pricing & availability.

The head of English was really happy and the children were also!

Thanks again, AndiR

congratulations ! it sounds brilliant. it's wonderful that you can spread awareness of ebooks like that ; i think at the moment one of the biggest hurdles is getting them into the general public awareness, and the more we talk about them the more they will take off. well done ! and thank you for sharing your experience with us.

That's great, 16 year olds can be difficult to impress -- but that age group are also very interested in technology (and competent in using it). I should also think the discussion about DRM would have been interesting as they have probably experienced it through music downloads. Thanks for the feedback.

Congratulations on a very successful presentation. Have some karma to go along with it.

The slides were very well done. You've probably cost parents $$$ as the kids now want to go out and get one.

Thanks for the feedback on the presentation!

DRM and Spain :-(

Interestingly I asked the classes who had mp3 players and 45 of 50 of them said yes.

When I asked who had purchased a song from the internet only 2 people put there hands up!

We had a very interesting discussion around paying for music and books!

Ereaders are not very common in Spain yet and I whilst my daughter's school is an English one the majority of the children are from Spanish families and there is not so much content available (or easy to find). Locally only carrefour is selling and I gues Fnac in Seville (85 miles away) may be selling also. They saw that for access to public domain books it made sense even if they are still "expensive" devices. I asked them about favuorite classic reads and pretty all of the authors they mentioned are on MobileRead.

Another interesting thing was the lack of interest in reading. Of the 50 students only 4 read more than 1 book a month outside of school required reading. I found that really low, but I was warned!

So it was good fun and worth the effort for their "book week"!

Cheers, AndiR

And who knows --- perhaps the "coolness" of the gadget could get them to read more?!

Okay, I actually started to goggle, until I quickly remembered you were in rural Spain. It's a good reminder of how different digital access can be in different parts of the world. On the other hand, physical access can be difficult in remote places too, making digital access, and therefore timely access to information, even more valuable.
