Maybe magazines or newspapers might pique your interest? Try Calibre for free ones. You can try to make your own, and being a gadget guy, you might like altering them with Python.

Congrats on the new reader. May I suggest that you head off to the Baen Free Library, where you will find 80+ free science fiction and fantasy novels. There's lots of good stuff there. With no idea of what you like (beyond what is quoted above) I'll hazard a few suggestions:
For humorous adventure, try Pyramid Scheme (Fantasy) or Rats, Bats, and Vats (SF)
For a kick-ass coming-of-age tale, try The March Upcountry (SF)
For SF mystery, try The Mountains of Mourning

If you're after something else entirely, ping me for other recommendations.

I think every teen should read Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. It's free from Doctorow's web site and also in our library here at MobileRead.

Of course, the companion book should be 1984 by George Orwell. Then, if I were a teacher -- of English or govenment or civics or whatever the high school is now called the class we knew as "Problems of Democracy" back in the 1960s -- I'd ask the students to think about why Doctorow chose his title. And how feasible either future seems to them. And how a society can balance the rights of the individual against the security of the many.

Oh my! I've kidnapped a nice thread about reading and opened it up to a serious discussion.

So, R34D3R. I'm really glad you have your Sony reader. I also have the silver one and I'm enjoying it. My hubby bought me the cover with the light-wedge in it and that makes the reader excellent for reading when travelling.

.
Elsi has a good suggestion here. Little Brother is nominated for this year's Hugo award, which is scifi's version of the Oscars.

Really, I thought "Little Brother" was about our current society and government, not some supposed government of the future. I see it as a reaction to the patriot act.

Wow! To be 15 again and be able to carry hundreds of books in the palm of my hand.
About the color. When I get engrossed in the book, I can't tell you if it is day or night But, like you, I prefer black.

Many folks have mentioned all the free books you can get. That makes it like sitting in a library and scanning through the stacks. Start reading; don't like it? Put it back and find something you do like. I bet you'll find some eye opening gems along the journey.

Enjoy reading; one of mankind's greatest gifts!

If I wished to be a mindless pedant, I would note that the book is called "Nineteen Eighty-Four", not "1984" .

Bob -- it definitely is a reaction to the PATRIOT Act, and is set in a contemporary or near future San Francisco. My recommendation to pair the two books in a single unit of study is due to the fact that both deal with an oppressive government.

You are welcome to be a pedant. The majority of the reprints hitting the market in the past two years show the title on the cover as "1984", regardless of the actual title. I even found this image of the 1985 Signet edition which has the numerals rather than words on the cover:

It may have originally been published as "Nineteen Eighty-Four, but The United States Library of Congress lists it as both "Nineteen Eighty-Four" and "1984." Titles do change sometimes throughout the life of a particular work.
