As long as one is able to buy the device without the plan. I don't want to be forced into a contract just to get a device I like.

The subsidized plan may work for some but would most people utilize the cellular network enough to justify a monthly fee?

Hmm. I think $25 a month is a bit high. $10 a month for 2 years, with a $50 initial drop for the device would be ... $290 all together, that's probably a bit low from their perspective, but I'm not sure I'd go much higher.

$100 down and $10 a month for 2 years might be interesting for others though ... if they were to drop the monthly price for the service after the first 2 years, I'd find the idea more interesting.

Why would I want to pay for wifi access when I have that at home? I'm not paying a fee to wirelessly access eBooks. I have perfectly good wifi at home I can use that I don't have to pay any extra to use.

Of course they are talking about Wireless (not WiFi). You know, those Cell tower things that make a mobile phone work.

I don't want wireless access, especially when it's going to lead to higher prices for ebooks. I have 10 books on my reader I haven't read. I don't need more. I can wait until the next time I'm at my PC to buy and load more books.

The only advantage I can see to wireless is dictionary/wikipedia/encyclopedia access. I don't want to have to pay more for ebooks just to get access to these features.

Wifi, wireless, it's all just a name and I don't want it if I have to pay more to have it.

Gotacha. Although, I think with my Kindle the Kindle store is generally the lowest price when I check around. So, yes a paid a bit more for the Kindle than a Sony might cost, but I don't feel that I am paying more for books because they are wirelessly delivered.

Someone with a Kindle 2 please confirm whether the dictionary function works even when you have wireless switched off. I thought the K2 had the Oxford Dictionary on (physically loaded in internal memory) the device. This is the single feature that is making me lean to the K2 over the Sony. As much as I use a dictionary normally, I love the idea of this and if it requires the wireless to be, that will kinda ruin it for me.

Yes, certainly it does, but if dictionary lookup is important to you, I would suggest that you consider the CyBook instead - it has much better dictionary support than the Kindle.

How is the CyBook dictionary better? Placing the cursor in front of a word and getting a brief definition is just about perfect for what I want. How is the CyBook better?

They only thing that I would say is better is that you can have multiple active dictionaries in the CyBook.

and there are enormously more dictionaries available - literally hundreds, both general-purpose, and specialist (eg all the "Oxford dictionary of <whatever>" series (art, architecture, music, etc etc).

I still don't get why you are saying the CyBook is better because of the dictionaries available, there are plenty available for Kindle also (1301): Kindle Dictionaries

Will CyBook permit you to place the cursor on a word and it look up a definition from multiple dictionaries automatically without manually opening them and searching? If so that would be better. In fact does CyBook automatically look up words from at least one installed dictionary like Kindle 2? If not that is a huge step backwards. I don't think Kindle's 1301 available dictionaries makes it better, more is not better, better is better.

If you drill down to "Reference › Dictionaries & Thesauruses" there are 200 entries, most of these are not dictionaries at all and most of the actual dictionaries cannot be used as the Kindle's "primary" dictionary. There do now seem to be a few dictionaries that can act as the primary dictionary (no easy way to find them though), but I agree with HarryT that there is no comparison between the few dictionaries available for the Kindle and the many available for all other MOBI-based devices.

See Wiki > Kindle Myths and Partial Truths > Only One Dictionary is available for the Kindle.
