Pardon my ignorance, but if I am understanding you correctly, I can purchase an epub from a site like booksonboard and be able to open it on my 505 without converting it using other software like Calibre?

I am new to all of this, so any help would be appreciated.

Yes. The PRS-505 includes a version of Adobe Digital Editions, which reads PDF and ePub ebooks (with or without Adobe DRM).

I agree and I often buy stuff from the States but if I need support for the Kindle I imagine that will be difficult from the UK. For this purchase I'll stick to devices that are sold in the UK.

A better test is to open the EPUB in Adobe Digital Editions. That'll be closer to what you'll see on a Reader.

Thanks, I tried that and it seems fine.

Wouldn't I need to buy the Sony before I get that? I looked on the Sony site but couldn't see a download.

No, it is very useful without a Sony Reader now that Sony exclusively offers Google books as ePubs. See Sony's Windows ebook Reader, but note that the software now emulates a PRS-700 rather than a PRS-505, and Sony Partners With Google To Bring More Than 500,000 Books To The Reader. Be sure to register as a US resident, no matter where you live.

Sorry for my tardy reply but I've been buried in Calibre ensuring our eBooks are titled correctly and consistently. I do believe I have finally finished.

Thanks, it's downloading as I type.

Is the 'register as a US citizen' bit because I won't be able to access certain features if I don't?

Oh, and we ordered our PRS-505s yesterday so Sony will be bringing out a new model tomorrow and Cybook will release a firmware upgrade that makes everyone happy...

Exactly. If you admit to being in the UK then they are reluctant to sell you books. Instead they expect you to go the very limited Waterstone's ebook store. And you won't be able to access the Sony freebie offers, or the Google Book collection

Thanks Patricia. I haven't accessed the store yet but is it safe to assume registering as a US resident with a credit card registered to a UK address isn't a problem?

Thanks.

Actually, they won't accept non-US credit cards. Just skip the page where they ask for credit card details.

If you want to buy books from them then Leaping Gnome (a forum member) will buy Sony Gift vouchers on behalf of non-US residents, and accepts PayPal.
And you can still buy from Watersone's etc.

And you can still "buy" the free books they periodically make available!

Er, I expect this is going to make me sound thick but I'm going to ask anyway!

Registering the device and signing up to the eLibrary seem to be the the same process so are you saying I should register my device to a US address?

You don't need to give an address. But if you want the Sony store then you have to tick the box claiming to be resident in the US.
