What? If so, that is REALLY bad engineering. I very much doubt this is true.

You are right, the book causing me the problem is one I purchased from Amazon. I've read other books (from Baen and other sites) which are not DRM and I swear they were just fine, which was why THIS one's behavior was so weird.

Amazon clearly has a problem in their firmware.

It's no doubt one of the power mgmt trade-offs made. Writing to memory takes more power than reading, so avoiding doing so extends the battery life. The only downside is if the unit crashes, it doesn't remember your place. Or if you insist on turning the blasted thing off - which you'll notice all the manuals have always discouraged. The only reason to turn it off is if an anal airline employee forces you to do so (since the possibility of it interfering when you have whispernet off is about the same as your watch (much less than the engines themselves or the actual wiring of the plane itself) or your phone once it's in airplane mode. Saving that tiny bit of power may seem silly, but it could easily account for a 5% increase in battery life.

I have both - last night the K1 locked up when I tried to change pages. After a full reset (push in the tiny button under battery cover), when I went back to the book, I was placed about 6 pages before where I left off. So the K1 also doesn't update the MBP file on every page change. I suspect it does when you jump "back" somewhere (I had recently jumped to the TOC, went to another chapter, then jumped back twice to get back to the original location, then read along just before it locked up), as well as go back to the menu.

I can usually replicate this problem on a Kindle 2 (my K1 doesn't have it) with a topaz book. Any other combination seems to save the place okay when I turn the unit off.

So I think its a problem with topaz/Kindle 2. I remember that K2 was supposed to have a new power management system that made the battery last longer; I wonder if writing to memory less often was part of that?

If you build a device that is not intended to be turned off I cannot see how it is REALLY bad engineering. The Cybook is designed in the same way. You loose the position if you do now exit the book before turning the unit off.

When I "shutdown" my PC properly, the OS gracefully closes all apps and saves anything.

Perhaps if you do the "reset" which is holding the switch for 15 seconds it is like unplugging the device. But, just sliding it for a second or so should do a proper shutdown.

I do not remember exactly how Windows PC works but when you use the button (the big one at the back) and turn off the power it does not shut down properly.

Also holding a button for 5 seconds to do something (I think that was for the Kindle) indicates that this is not a normal thing to do but just an emergency thing.

Um, sure, maybe in the 90s. But now a days the power button is a "soft" button that sends a signal to the OS to shutdown. Although, I think most people use Start -> Shutdown rather than flip the power or shut it off.

Also, you can use the power management to determine if the power button does a sleep, hibernate or shutdown... at least on Windows and Mac. I don't know about Linux.

I am pretty sure my new Dell Workstation at work has a power switch at the back that just cut the power. Of course it also has a power switch in front that works as you describe.

Is it really necessary to turn off your Kindle when on a plane? I would think turning off Wireless would be sufficient. I would like to be able to read my Kindle during long flights.

1. Wireless should be off on the plane ALL the time like any other device.

2. The Kindle itself should be off completely for "take off and landings" like any other device.

3. Neither of the above are "really necessary" and are just a bunch of stupid airline rules dressed up as safety concerns. There are no documented cases of risk from such devices operating on planes.

I use bookmarks for sections I might want to go back and re-read (I read a lot of mysteries and thrillers). Also when anyone wants to play with my Kindle I make sure to bookmark the page before they start pressing buttons.

A couple of people have mentioned bookmarked pages, which isn't the same as just turning the Kindle off while reading (without bookmarking).
