Remember too that the Blackberry software is a beta product, there are bound to be problems to work through (although I'd think something as easy as unlocking a book wouldn't be a problem).

Don't recall selecting Kindle 2 as a device when I signed up here, must have been a Freudian Slip indicating my desire.

I didn't use a credit card to buy the book. I used a credit card to put $25 on the MicroPay fund, then selected MicroPay to buy the book. THEN, after buying and downloading the book, I discovered you have to have a credit card on file to 'Unlock' the book. I tried the credit card used to fund the $25 in the MicroPay account.

Got a response from Fictionwise and though their example shows entering the last four digits of the credit card, you must enter the entire number. Did so and VIOLA!

Another satisfied customer! I'm hopeful that they weren't answering today because they are designing the perfectly seemless ebook software store they will implement as a Barnes & Noble ebook-seller. Thanks Fictionwise. And I'll let you know how the book is later (no spoilers, please.)

I'm using the Mobipocket reader on my Blackberry and have been successful in getting secured Mobipocket files to read on it. I have registered the PIDs from my PC and Blackberry at Fictionwise.

Yea okay, maybe I wrote it little bit too haste without thinking through. Not that I would mind about the device locking. It is allowed to use more that one device at same time and also change the devices when needed. I guess problems arise only if the service goes down and if you then change devices.

However, I don't know about your country, but here the credit card is a privilege only for those who have jobs. That already excludes some of the potential customers and as the FAQ states, not all international cards might work even if legitimate and branded as VISA. Within my short live I have already experienced two kind problems with such transactions (most purchases still work tho):

1) once the transaction was refused because some idiot decided that Finland as a whole country should be blacklisted

2) EA Online Store doesn't seem to work for me. I have to use PayPal with them. I don't know why

Thus, even if credit card dependent DRM might be a good alternative for device locked DRM, I still think it is a damn good thing that such DRM isn't the only alternative.

I think you have to enter the last 8. Any more than that and it only uses the last 8.

Glad you got it working! Woot!

Fair point; the ereader DRM is a problem for someone without a credit card.

Fictionwise is a great company. I got an offer from them to sign up for one year of the Buy Club and they'd put half the cost back into my Micropay account. So I did, and the 50% rebate didn't show up. I sent them an email, got a response back apologizing for the problem and letting me know it was fixed. Absolutely great as far as I'm concerned. When you've only got 5 employees, there's a great deal of ownership in the problems they're presented with, and I'd be surprised to hear any problems going unsolved there.

Now that they're "A Barnes & Noble Company", maybe they can hire more employees.

More likely B&N will suck off a couple of FW's employees.

Totally unintentional, I assure you. In fact I had not even seen it until your post. Usually, I am the master of the single entendre.

A double post of a double entendre. Would that make it a double-double entendre?

WDE.

Actually you do, though I agree it's just not clear.

To unlock a book you need to specify your name on the credit card you used to buy the book AND the credit card number you used to buy the book.

Their eReader product is good, however I'd recommend that you download MobiPocket's Blackberry reader it's a far better reader and with MobiPocket you can buy books from Fictionwise, BooksOnBoard, MobiPocket, etc.... Where eReader will tie you to the fictionwise store.

Fictionwise is a reputable company. One of the better companies that supporst the eBook community.
