No, they are keyboard-disablers. So nothing happens when you accidentally press a key. THAT does have merit.

Since an eink screen needs no battery power to maintain an image, how does it waste the battery? Are you implying to draw/clear the pic image the few times a day your machine goes in or out of sleep mode is really going to have any noticeable effect on the battery? I very much doubt it would.

I just wanted to thank everyone and give a quick update. My Kindle died last month and was replaced by Amazon. For whatever reason, the pictures seem to look better on this new one. I am using the Photoshop method, so that obviously had a lot to do with it, but I can't help but believe that there was also a hardware issue going on as well...
