Excuse me, but why is this a 'silliness' thread ?

Actually I was musing about the music situation not long ago. I love my ZUNE, don't get me wrong, but I often wonder at the importance of music to the generation that has had nothing but music on demand their entire lives... as a young soldier in Germany, I was taken under the wing by a Staff Sergeant in my unit. He lived with his German girlfriend (later wife) off post. He would quite often have some of us over to their apartment for good eats, bier and conversation. Of course music was an absolutely critical part of this equasion. He had at the time a top of the line turntable along with a saphire needle. The ritual of playing the vinyl was of the highest importance, cleaning the platter with solution, gently applying the velvet roller to insure not a bit of detritus interfere with the sublime meeting of needle and track. More often than not I was given the distinct honor of picking the albums and playing them. It was quite a serious decision; committing my and my comrades listening attention for the following 30-45 minutes. Nothing like mindlessly skipping through a less than favorite track on your player, or even CD, if that is what you are using. Indeed, I would try to sculpt the album to the present company or topic of conversation. I have vivid memories of mulling over the covers of Judy Collins, ABBA, even the Berlin Harmonic Orchestra. I read them quite closely considering every aspect of the musical journey I was about to subject us all to. I can't imagine that today's kids put as much thought into their musical adventures.

I find I have to do some quick math sometimes to figure how far back or forward to go. One hold goes 10 pages plus a quick click or two forward or back, etc. In the end, I've found that it is almost as fast as with a pbook. The only thing different that I've found is that my memory of where a piece of information is located is not as good. I use to have a picture in my mind of where on the page it was located and what the facing page contained in order to quickly locate it. This helped in college texts and work-related papers but not in the ebooks so far. Maybe my brain needs to be wired differently to store and locate ebook information

I remember when PC first started. It seemed to be a major pain to remember what to call everything. Then "new" words were still being changed and you had to remember the current one in use. It was a hoot to listen to my grandmother talk!

But somewhere along the way things went crazy. You can hardly open your mouth anymore without SOMEONE being offended and wanting to sue over something. Everyone has gotten so THIN-SKINNED. Let the water run off the duck's back and get over it already.

I agree

Most of the time, I watch my students holding their players and "clicking, clicking, clicking". It seems as though they spend more time "clicking" through selections than actually listening to them.

At the time, many people didn't understand why the word was "not nice". It was just what it was. If someone was MR, they were just MR. That was life. No one thought anything of it. Then it was "special". Then it was "challenged". All the same... Each person determines whether it is an insult or not. Our parents taught us how to respond and behave.

I don't know Geoff. Maybe I just thought it would end up going that way. But probably just because I'm only slightly smarter than a turnip and don't know any better. I will defer to the wisdom of all those who are GREEN and in control to move the thread to a more appropriate place. By all means, please do (so I won't look dumber than a turnip.)

I'm sorry. I think I was just politically incorrect. I meant no disrespect to the turnip species, I assure you. So before I find myself being sued by the entire vegetable population for being insensitive, I want to publically and with all haste humbly apologize for my despicable remarks regarding the glorious turnip.

Somehow I just knew that an immediate apology wouldn't be enough for some of you, so to avoid the Turnip Troupe v Lady B lawsuit that I am sure is being considered by the Veggie Confederation of MR, I hereby announce that I will sign myself into rehab without delay. You left out "gifted". I was at the receiving end of the other end of the scale when the "Gifted" was popular. It wasn't pretty....

Yep. Back before "gifted" was the PC word, people/kids were just "smart". So you were either dumb or smart and sometimes both at the same time

We never thought anything of it until the world started PC "labels" and it made everything stand out.

It MUST be over by now. It sure SEEMED like 3 hours, though I'm not really sure. There was no clock in the room. Just Bugs Bunny and a couple jugs of carrot juice, and that Arrogant Worm music playing OVER and OVER and OVER. It MUST have been 3 hours.

I'll tell ya'. It WORKED. I'm REALLY sensitive NOW. I'll never look at a turnip in the same way again. And by gosh, I believe I AM as smart as a turnip now. I'll never utter hogwash like that again.

Damn. I did it again. I apologize to all the little piggies out there. BACK TO REHAB!
