The biggest advantage to buying from Fictionwise is that neither Analog, Asivov's or Interzone are DRMed!! They're multiformat so you simply download the format that works best for your device.

It's certainly the longest running SF Magazine in the world. And has published stories by nearly all the great SF writers, past and present. Of course, it's only been called Analog since the 1960s. Before that is was called Astounding. Well, mostly. There have been several tweaks to the name along the way: Astounding Stories of Super-Science Astounding Stories Astounding Science-Fiction Astounding Science Fiction Analog Astounding Science Fact & Fiction Analog Science Fact & Fiction Analog Science Fact & Science Fiction Analog Science Fiction & Science Fact Analog Science Fiction and Fact Last edited by pdurrant; 03-20-2009 at 06:06 PM. |

Technically true - this works for BOOKS. It does not work for any subscriptions. They don't advertise it a lot, but you only get the last 3 or seven (depends on type) for redownload (and on the K2, they delete automatically, unless you mark a subscription item for "save"). Also, if you cancel a subscription, you lose access to the download feature - better be sure you have all your copies downloaded before you do so.

My Dad subscribed to Analog when I was young and that's what turned me on to science fiction and science in general. Can't remember exactly what it was called back in the 60's and 70's but I know that I read it every month after Dad finished with it.

I started reading Analog during the late '60's... at one time I had 25 years worth until they became damaged and mildewed during my various moves while on active duty in the Navy. Of course that was only a portion of the 50 book boxes I had on my last move to Norfolk. All were eventually ruined. It kills me now to see the same first edition hardbound Heinleins, Asimov's, etc at various bookstores... Thankfully I kept my leatherbound LOTR inside!
I am shifting over to electronic versions now that I have my Kindle. |

Fictionwise is the best place to subscribe to those magazines - I've only been subscribing to Analog there since 2005 but I can still download all my back issues. (This is very good for me because I read them in spurts). Plus they offer F&SF which you can't get from the Kindle store (not quite as good a deal right now because it's categorized as Fantasy- but it's available).
I also prefer the lump sum payment system Fictionwise uses. |

Lemurion: note that Fictionwise has started putting a notice on their sales that says they might delete access to your old purchases, so you should back them up yourself.

I always do - though I think that notice is more to protect themselves in case it proves necessary rather than a statement of intent. So far I've lost access to precisely one book since 2004 and that was because of Overdrive.
Even so, I prefer a stated goal of keeping books available on the bookshelf as long as possible to one of removing access after a fixed time. It's the difference in intent that matters to me. The whole Overdrive fiasco also shows that Fictionwise really does want to maintain customer access as long as possible, while Amazon's first foray into ebooks does not |

Let's hope the purchase by Barnes and Noble doesn't reduce the small company service!
