I have a folder for each of my Kindles. Each book I purchase from Amazon is downloaded six times, once into each of the three devices and once into each directory.

Those directories (along with my iTunes music, photos and documents) are backed up onto (1) a mirror drive on my main computer, (2) my laptop, (3) my NAS storage device, and (4) online to Carbonite.com.

No .... I back up like a maniac because I don't want to ever have to face data loss. I've got too much time and money invested in my data.

Right now I have Calibre to keep all my books organized since you can add diffrent formats for the same book... I then back up my eBook folder to a thumb drive.

I use a mac and have an external hard drive, so I just throw copies of the ebooks onto the mac and let time machine back it up for me!

That's one of the things I like about using macs, I don't have to worry about the small details (backing up, viruses, spyware, registry problems etc).

I can see where you wouldn't have to worry about registry problems, but even Mac owners need to think about backups (and should absolutely have off-site backups of all important documents).

Also, while the vast number of viruses and malware are targeted at Windows PCs, you are living in a dream world if you think that having a Mac makes you impervious to attack.

One folder per author. Within that, one folder per book. Within that, one folder per format, plus and source files used to create the book if it's one I've done myself.

Main e-book library on my PC's hard disk. Daily incremental backups to an external USB hard disk. Monthly or so backups of that to DVD.

I am in the progress of reorganizing my library.

First I have a folder for original download and updated version. The original download folder contains one folder per author, then one folder for series (if the author has series) and the books (no matter their format) in there.

The updated version has two folders, HTML and MOBI. The HTML contains one folder per author, one folder per series and one folder per book (and in there the EPUB directory structure and files). the MOBI contains the same layout as the original download folder, but this one only contains mobi files.

These files are on an external HD which I backup to a network drive. And the mobi's are also on two SD cards (which are mirror images of each other, and that includes a backup of my PDA).

Time machine is built in back up software on the Mac. It backs up to an external hard drive. That is what I have now also. But, I do plan to get JungleDisk and put my data files off-site too... just haven't gone about it yet. Of course, everything I have is backed up at it source too, be it Amazon, Fictionwise, Feedbooks or Mobileread.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. I also back up my ebook collections to CD as well. Just paranoid enough to go the little extra mile...

Wow, and everyone thinks I am anal! Seriously, you will be smiling when I am tearing my hair out. I only have the back-up drive, and delete it off my computer. What if the back-up drive goes? What an idiot!

I realize that, but only having a local backup is only marginally better than having no backup at all. Just ask all those people who lost all of their data, including backups, in Hurricane Katrina.

If you delete your original file after your backup then you have no backup at all. And, you are right .... not backing up is insane.

No doubt. But, this is just personal data. So, so catastrophic thing like that is not very likely. If that does happen I think I will have more trouble than worrying about not being able to recover some ebooks.

And, as I say, all my ebooks ARE backed up online... being at the original sources web site.

As I say, I do have it in my plans. But, I just keep putting it off. Jungledisk just announced the new version supports their own storage cloud in addition to Amazon... so that may be the straw that gets me moving. Also, the $.15/gb per month is the same but they have no transfer fees.

Hmm....

But yes, no backup at all is pretty much not a good idea. Probably a Mozy account is a good bet for most people that want to set/forget for $50 a year.
