Excuse me butting in, since I don't own a Kindle and I'm not American. I have seen on other threads that the Kindle needs to be activated or registered or something via whispernet. There seem to be many non USA residents with Kindles that don't work..... How will you use the Kindle outside the USA, if your friend doesn't register it first?

Non American kindle users, correct me if I'm wrong...

Do you have an American credit card to buy Amazon books?

It can be registered on Amazon's website, but without also registering via Whispernet you can get into the settings to name it & stuff, from what I've read. I haven't seen where anyone had their Kindle simply not work without Whispernet. There are places in the US with no Whispernet coverage.

They can be bought with Gift Certs, no CC needed. Amazon of course isn't the only source of content out there.

You will only be missing the features that require whispernet. D/l'ing books and samples, using the basic web browser, using wikipedia.

Didn't I read somewhere on this board that samples could be downloaded from Mobipocket? Or was it somewhere else?

No, the OP's Kindle can't tell it's registered. The only thing they can't access is the settings where you name it. They can still buy books, add books via usb and read books. They can't use any wireless features, but I assume they would have known that before buying.

Oh, I see... I went to read the thread again. However, I have seen similar threads somewhere else too (with European users?).
As long as rubikscube99 is getting correct advice from non USA residents who know that it can DEFINITELY work. I personally would be very upset indeed, if I jumped through all those hoops to get a Kindle only to find out that I can't use it.
