I'm in an excellent coverage area and if I leave wireless on my battery lasts 36 hours at the most. With the wireless off for 4 days I barely saw the battery indicator move, it moved maybe 5%.

I can tell you from experience that is not "2 weeks without wireless" on my K2.

I was just on vacation outside the US and turned off the radio. The battery was down
to 1/2 within a day. I was not sitting around flipping pages. I am back in the US
now so I have not had a chance to test this completely but I was not amused.

gv3 - When I loaded a lot of books, it took the Kindle days and days to index them all and battery life was atrocious. Had you just loaded the Kindle with a number of books?

snipenekkid - This is with the K2, my K1 battery lasts about the same with the wireless on but lasts less than a week with it off.

Yeah with my K1 (was used--about 5 months old) I was getting 3-4 days of averaging maybe 1.5-2 hours a day of reading with wireless off to get down to half a battery (at which point I recharged it).

I wonder if that's what happened with mine, I loaded about 500 books. I was getting 36 hours tops with wireless off and now I'm getting MUCH improved performance. Of course now that mine seems to be working fine Amazon has a replacement on the way.

Hmm, interesting, I had not loaded anything new before the trip other than
my daily newspaper and weekly magazine (NYT and New Yorker). The only
books I had purchase, or papers I had sent to my Kindle (I send CS papers
to it to read) were at least a day or two before, most of them longer
before that. It's an interesting point though, about the indexing. I should
do a more formal test of this but I use the thing too much to spend time
on doing that.

Thanks

I have just under 1/2 battery on my indicator and my last charge was on the 6th (yes I am keeping a close track). I read every day and have finished 4 books and am into my fifth since getting the K2 on 26FEB.

I will say that I only have 13 books on my K2, the rest are my finished books in the Archived Items.

It seems to me, from the posts, that if you have a large number of books loaded on the K2 that negatively affects battery life.

Is this just in the beginning while the K2 indexes or is this a set formula where battery life is inversely proportional to the size of the installed library?

Sorry that I wasn't replying, I was out-of-town and out of touch for several days.

Anyway, my understanding is similar to that of DHill (post 7) that the battery should be recharged in USB drive mode when connected to your PC. The issue with ejecting and leaving it plugged in is that you can't actually read it in USB drive mode. So this means that connected to your PC normally means USB drive and charging while connected, but 'ejected' means it is readable and charging.

Furthermore, I would note that this is my second e-ink device and that even with my previous device I was at the low end of the battery time. As someone mentioned previously, the trick is page turns not time in use. Here are some factors that can affect page turns:
1) Faster reading
2) Font size (as mentioned earlier)
3) Skimming -- when I am re-reading a book, there are times when I will skip through sections. This means a lot of quick page turns without really reading the content when I skip through the boring part. Unfortunately, this drains the battery just as much as if those pages were read.

For whatever reason, I seem to be bad on reading times. Even with wireless off I usually can't go much more than three or four days if I am actively reading; more usually about two days.

I will try the experiment someone suggested of hooking to a desktop computer and/or a USB hub.

One thing you might try is letting the battery drain all the way, then recharging. Sometimes it's suggested this can help get back a full charge if you seem to have a shorter than usual one (but on the other hand, each time you do this ultimately decreases the maximum battery charge).
