Unfortunately that is very difficult to predict. The ePub format (some of which are have DRM) seems to be gaining momentum as a "standard", but this is far from achieved.

I appreciate you don't want to get involved at the sharp end of liberating your eBooks from their DRM straightjackets, but if you want true portability you will need to conquer that fear!

Three pieces of very good news:

(i) It is actually very easy

(ii) This forum is full of excellent help, either via searching, or by asking directly if you get stuck

(iii) Most of the sites have a sample book for you to play with, so you can experiment without spending money

Good luck!

... and the bad news: in most countries you are breaking the law by removing DRM. Perhaps the original poster prefers not to become a criminal?

It was definately PC phobia - no mention was made about the concerns of becoming a fugitive of the law

In the USA you may or may not be breaking the law by removing DRM -- no one really knows yet. It seems that there are reasonable legal arguments in both directions, so we'll have to wait for the courts to sort it out.

(Obligatory disclaimer: I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. Should you need legal advice on which you may rely, please consult a real lawyer. On the other hand, I have sat through a graduate seminar on the topic at a top US University so I know enough to be dangerous )

In the US it is probably illegal - however many people consider it to be at worst the equivalent of driving slightly above the posted speed limit on a deserted highway in perfect road conditions.

Personally I consider it functionally equivalent to ripping a purchased CD so I can play it on my mp3 player.
