Here is another question... When I was uninstalling a program today, I saw an entry in the Add/Remove programs list as "PRS-500 USB driver". Will my 505 work when I connect it to my computer with the current drivers? Are there specific drivers for the 505?
Thanks.

The 505 doesn't need any special drivers - it just appears as a standard USB removable drive (actually, drives, as it's two card slots appear as drives in addition to the drive mapping to the internal memory).

Thanks for the information. I went ahead and did an uninstall-reinstall of the eBook reader software with the most recent version downloaded from SONY after picking 505 as the drive, and it still installed 500 USB drivers; so, that should work...

It appears that there are hacks, add-ons, etc utilizing the memory card slot(s) of the 505. Does it matter if I get a memory stick pro or an SD card? I dont have any other devices that use memory stick, but I would also like to buy SDHC, which is not compatible with 505 I think. Is the limit for the SD card is 2GB? What is the "recommended" size for a memory card purchase?

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure about SDHC with the latest firmware but in reality, you're probably not going to want to put much on any particular card, so personally, I'd suggest just getting one of two small cards(e.g. 512M/1G/2G) and see if you actually use them (other than for firmware tweaking). In practice, I've not ended up using mine.

I'm pretty sure that with the newer firmware the larger SDHC cards will work, but as gwnevans says--you don't need that much room.

I do have a 2gb card in mine, but I've only got about five books on it. The rest (280 at last count are all on the reader's internal memory.) I put the PDF books I have on the card, because they take up significantly more room than LRF or ePub files. If possible, I try to stick with LRF/ePub.

Happy reading!

That's exactly what I was planning to do: put pdf books/documents on the card and smaller formats on the internal memory. I'll find a card with a good space/price ratio in this case.

Thanks!

I have read that SDHC works for the Sony 505. As others have said try to keep the card size at or below 2GB. I have a single 512MB card that is just used for tweaking as I only carry around 40 - 60 books on the Reader at any one time. PDFs do take up more space, more so if they have pictures. If you do buy a larger SD card and fill up it's capacity, the Reader's menu would work against you when trying to find a specific book to read or reference.

It seems like a 2GB SD card would be more than enough. I happen to have one in my point and shoot digital camera which supports SDHC; so, I'll transfer that to 505 and buy a bigger SDHC card for the digital camera.

Thanks!

Having an SD card in the machine will noticably reduce battery life. You're better off without one unless you actually find yourself running out of room.

Thanks for the heads up. I wont use one until I "really" need it; or, I can run some battery tests with and without an SD card to see what the impact under my usage pattern is... 2 more days!!!
