I heard that the amazon content is DRM protected, so if i buy the content on my computer, download it, and transfer to my kindle- how will it be able to read it?? Because keep in mind that i have NO wireless connectivity with the kindle whatsoever, so even if i register it on amazon- will it know that it has been registered? and how will it read content purchased with my US amazon account? i dont get it, i can register my kindle on the computer, but isnt this a two way process? doesnt the kindle have to know that it has been registered? It has no wireless connectivity. I am NOT ordering with my amazon account, a friend is getting it for me and i am paying him back.
please help,
thanks
You do not have to have wireless access to register a Kindle or to download books. There are places in the US where there is no wireless coverage for the Kindle, but folks can still get books. You can't download sample chapters without wireless and getting firmware updates might be more involved, but you can register the Kindle over the web, you can buy books and download them to your computer and then transfer them via USB as long as the books are bought on the same account the Kindle is registered to (you friend would need to deregister it from their account so you can register it to yours).

Ok, I figured out my plan and now i understand my question.. lol
My friend is ordering a kindle from HIS amazon account in the US (he lives there). He is visiting me in INDIA and bringing the kindle for me. Given that there is no wireless coverage in india, how do i deregister his kindle and register mine and use my US amazon account (which is funded by gift cards only). So: How do i deregister from an account and register to an account without any wireless connectivity? The amazon site says something about having to be connected to the wireless to finalize the registration ?

The key to all this is the serial number of the device. Your friend needs to deregister the Kindle from his account. This can be done via computer. You then need to go to Amazon.com and register the Kindle to your account. From then on, when you purchase a book, you will specifiy that it be delivered to your Kindle via computer. You then download the book and put it on your Kindle via the usb cable.

This is a similiar transaction to what people do when they purchase a second hand Kindle from ebay or friend. If you have any further questions, contact Kindle support and ask your questions. Avoid explaining about being out of the U.S. - just tell them you are not in a Whispernet zone.

cheers

Just tell your friend to indicate that the kindle is a gift when he purchases it then all you have to do is register it under your US Amazon account. As for the purchasing and downloading of books from Amazon, it's very simple. Purchase a gift card (can be purchased with a non-US issued credit card) and pay for your books using the gift cards. You can download your purchased books from Amazon under "Manage my Kindle" directly to your PC and then upload them to your Kindle via the USB cable. They will be readable on your Kindle because the purchases would have been made under your Amazon account where you registered your Kindle.

I live in Singapore. Haven't gotten my Kindle yet but this is what I intend to do...to make things simplier for me, I created a second Amazon account specifically for my Kindle so that I don't get myself all confused lol.

Kindle ebook files are protected with a internal PID based on the Kindle's serial number, which Amazon already knows. So as soon as the Kindle is transferred to your account you will be able to buy ebooks and download them with the correct PID. Make sure your Kindle-specific US Amazon account does not have a non-US credit card (or address) associated with it.
