also the iliad v1 (original) is not being made anymore. You will very likely getting a used iliad v1. The battery may not hold as much charge as a brand new thus giving you even less hr per charge cycle! The wifi is nice but not necessary. If u can, get a brand new book edition.

for my openion i liked iliad 2nd edidtion when it comes to file supports and flexability.
BUT
did you conseder the speed of the reader. (because this is the most thing i didnt like with iliad) tooooooooooo slooooooooow even when you have nothing installed and small books.
you are going for 1 year research, then i will recommend you to extend your research period if you are getting iLiad.

I am sorry to tell you guys who want to buy iLiad not to buy from iRex as they are not trustworthy at all. I have ordered and paid for it on April 16 and till now, they have not even gotten back to me that they have shipped out my item. They couldn't even be bothered to tell me what is wrong ? I have paid almost 600 euros and they don't even have the decency to apologise for the delay. This is so frustrating !!

I would advise all potential owners to be very careful if they are deciding to buy an iLiad.

I don't even have that problem, even though I wanted one they aren't selling in the US anymore, cause of their WIFI...

When I ordered my Iliad, about 1 year and a half ago it came pretty quickly. I think they are having some sort of issue with where they can ship to or something like that.

I like the Iliad but it is very slow, I think its the best reader out but its not saying much with what the competition is putting out there. Something like the Plastic Logic device looks great but thats another year away. I don't think you'll be upset if you get an Iliad but you definitely won't love it either

Hi there,

I am considering to buy an iLiad but I am not sure which version. What are the differences between the iRex iLiad V2 and the iRex iLiad Book Edition? Only the WIFI or are there other differences? Does the software run on a Mac? Which one would you recommend. I have read in another forum that iRex does not continue the support of the iRex iLiad Book. Does anyone know something about this. Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards

Wolfgang

From what I know, that is the only difference btw the iliad v2 and the iliad-be.

Which software are you referring to? is it the iliad companion software?
I have never felt the need to use it. Felt it is like an appendix..ignored it and stopped it from auto loading and never used it.
As for iliad itself, it should show up as a usb drive on win/mac/linux. dont know if this works on mac.

Your choice. Of the two, Iliadv2 costs more, has wifi and slightly lesser battery life. Iliad-be costs lesser(than iliad-v2), no wifi and slightly more battery.
So if wifi is important and dont mind paying, iliadv2 else iliad-be.

Irex will not release software updates for the iliad anymore. But the device as such will be supported. Any hardware, iliad's own software issues will be supported.

Another recommendation is, do take a look at DR100S. This is Irex's current interest and the recent FW 1.6 update seems to have made it very good.

So the question is..

1.) is the wifi of iliad v2 only available in the US and EUR and Canada? (like the amazon kindle's whispernet) or can i surf the net using my regular wifi connection? (I am living in the Philippines; Southeast Asia)

2.) what is the most flexible ebook reader that i can buy that supports novels/pdfs/textbooks in a really non-hassle conversion format?

I am really torn. I don't know what to buy.

For the avoidance of doubt:
iLiad's WiFi is not comparable to Amazon's Whispernet!!
iRex does NOT host any webshop.
WiFi mainly is used for firmware updates. Unfortunately, reports on this website state, that there won't be any firmware updates for iLiad any more, iRex focussing on 1000S instead. (No biggy, the firmware imho is "close to perfect").
There are some 3rd party applications, supporting WiFi. For example, downloading comics like "Dilbert" from the Web.
You can browse the web via 3rd party web browsers. But is this really fun, given the eInk technology?

Thanks for the answers. I have the impression, the more you ask and the more you know the more complicated it gets to decide.

With no webshops, WIFI doesn't seem to help much since it seems that one can not download anything useful. Did I get this right?

I am having a hard time spending a lot of many on device that is apparently at the end of its lifecylce. Does anyone know if there is anything new device planned by iRex to replace the Iliad?

Regarding iRex 1000S: I haven't seen it in real, but it really seems too big for an ebook reader. I would prefer a smaller one like the iLiad oder the Sony PRS-505.

Well I think I will wait a little bit before I decide which one to buy.

Regards

Wolfgang

Well, they're also a different color, but that's a minor thing.

I'm pretty sure they have the same battery life.

Regarding Wifi, there's not much to really download from their MyiRex site anymore since there won't be any major firmware updates. However, the wifi can also be used to transfer files from your PC to the iLiad instead of having to plug it in via a USB cable.

I like to keep my iLiad upstairs in the bedroom for reading in the evenings, and my PC is in the basement. With the Wifi, I just have to turn the iLiad on at night and have it connect to my network to sync with the PC and download new eBooks. It's mostly just a convenience thing, but not having to run back and forth in order to plug in a USB cable is pretty nice. Whether or not that convenience is worth the extra cost is up to you, but I thought I'd mention it. That's mostly what I use the Wifi for.

I have the Book Edition and it works well with Mac. There is one problem though (pls correct me if I'm wrong): it seems to me that there is no scribble merge program for Mac.

Ok I did it. Today I bought a Sony PRS-505. The reason was the price an the fact, that I was hesitating quite a while before choosing the PRS-505 considering also the iRex and the CyBook, but the fact that the Sony reader was the only device I could touch and try out at my bookstore together with the price did convince me that the PRS-505 is the right choice for me. Maybe the next reader will be an iRex!
