I expect you can do that even if you do have a Kindle registered to that account but I don't know because I don't have that. Anyway, I gift the book to her. She then gets an email to which she has to respond to accept the gift. Once she does that, I go to her account and download the book to my Kindle. If she wants to, she can download the book to the Kindle app on her iPad. If she buys a book, I can also go to her account and download it to my Kindle.

I have to have the password for her account in order to download to my Kindle although I guess it would work if I didn't have that -- she would just have to go initiate the download to my Kindle. This might not work so well if she didn't trust me to not buy stuff on her account since it would go onto her credit card. She might not like it if I got myself a new TV or fancy camera.
It seems that to simplify things somewhat that you could just utilize the archives on your Kindle to obtain the books you have bought (via the gift feature) or that she has bought without having to utilize her password specifically. Of course, you can still buy things through your Kindle on her account since it is registered to her account, but it saves you having to "know" her password.

I realized that I was being unclear, but was too lazy to reword. :-)

What I meant was resetting the synchronization if you have this situation:

Reader#1 starts book, reads on K3 and Laptop using synchronization. Book is now marked on Amazon's servers with the last page as "furthest read".

Reader #2 starts the book after Reader #1 is done... reads on their K3 and their hacked Nook Color, can't synchronize because Amazon's servers keep trying to tell their devices that the last page read is the last page of the book.

IIRC, Amazon only keeps track of forward progress, and there's no way that I know of to reset it back to page 1 for the second reader.

OK, there's a way, though it has the drawback of throwing away all synchronizations, not just the single book.
