My gripe on Sony(not very many though) is its continued avoidance of the rest of the world as far as the Sony Reader.
I got the chance to touch the device(PRS 500 i think) in Borders, SFO once 2-3 yrs ago. The device is much more popular now and should have been launched worldwide at whatever price(doesnt matter since Sony tends to be costlier than rest in most cases). I found the info about tokyo book fair in this link.. http://web.reedexpo.co.jp/tibf/english/ but it is still quite a while away. |

It's the complexity of the individual page that matters. There certainly are some PDFs that the CyBook can't handle - but that's true of all devices. The Sony undoubtedly has the best PDF handling at present, although that may change when Adobe's software comes to the Gen3, as is scheduled to happened within the next few weeks.

The Kindle's cover is FANTASTIC. The device will NOT come out of the cover, regardless what kind of hit it takes, or G's it's pulling. The cover will protect the device for sure.

Amazon?
Quote:
![]() The reason is because: I am FURIOUS that they will happily take my (and of course millions of other people's) non American CC for pbooks and other goods, and charge huge shipping fees to ship to anywhere around the world, but won't allow me in their private ebook store! Not exactly a GREEN company now is it! Just think of all the damage AMAZON wreaks on the environment. For these reasons, as childish as it may seem, I will never buy another thing from Amazon. EVER! Well obviously that could change, and I would have to eat humble pie if they were the last store on the planet.... ![]() I have waited since BEFORE the release of the Kindle 1 for them to get their act together and open their ebook store. But it's obvious (to me) that they only care about their local market. So be it, as let's face it, ebooks are 'freely' available in more ways than one ![]() However I much prefer to buy my books (and titles that I actually WANT to read) easily at a store, where I am a member, click - click - transfer - read! (Something like Audible.com...?) So unless Amazon and the Kindle become the iPod and iTunes of the future, and NOT using them would be a pointless exercise in sulking, I don't see myself spending another dime at Amazon! |

From the recent news abt Sony reader debuting in Switzerland, i hope they come more eastward, in a decent amount of time
![]() I am still fixated on the iliad because for one it promises a lot and has lot of power; but its grossly underdone. If i do get it, if i can work up my nerve, i plan to push it..If it can stay alive that is.. thats a lot of "ifs" for 1 device.. ![]() dragonbone-san, can you post your experiences with your new PRS-700. I know a lot has been said abt this device in this forum. But a new owner always tends to have different and often interesting perceptions.. ![]() |

There are many other available devices, (much, MUCH nicer than the Kindle IMHO) and very promising looking readers popping up (or being promised) almost daily now... As for Amazon's excuse..... Why can other ebook stores sell their ebooks internationally but not Amazon? And where have I (personally) seen that polite little snub: 'I'm sorry this book is not yet available for your geographical region'? Let me see.... oh yes, iTunes, audible.com, one or two other book stores..... and AMAZON.COM! Now if they can say that for pbooks and other products etc. but not for ebooks...... Anyway it's too late now and I will never spend another single red penny at Amazon. Just my 2 cents worth. Last edited by dragonbone; 03-14-2009 at 06:59 AM. |

Hi pbananth, thanks for the info. I am also planning to get a device shipped to chennai.
Do you know of any special customs issues/duties/delays that people need to know of? Is there any extra charges due to this? |

they shipped thro USPS Express. within 2 to 3 days it reached chennai.
Here the post man phoned and told that I should pay 600 rupees (he told me extra custom and etc.)and delivered to my home.( i think rs.600 is for handling). ask the seller to post through express with tracking facilities.I purchased REB 1200 directely from the company and my niece picked it from usa to chennai.) Probably i will be selling my 1150. |

Hi Hari,
Some words about shipping electronics to India. Anything above 100$ declared value (and sometimes even below, its upto their discretion) will attract custom duties etc. (around 20% of value I think or some more in total basically) + Indian Post is really NOT known for their gentle handling, not to mention the large postage cost you will face. I know of cases with even more robust stuff getting damaged in transit through international post so I would suggest you avoid it as much as possible. Best bet, find someone you know who is in the US or something. Either buy one through Amazon (Accepts Indian internaitonal CCs, pretty much all Indian Cards) or tell that person to buy it and bring it along when they come back. Safest method, especially when you are spending so much on it. For the record: I am based out of Pune. My PRS505 is with fedex somewhere on the way to Arizona where a friend will receive and bring it to India ![]() |

pbananth,techie_007 thanks for the info.
I did feel it will be kind of a miracle to get some sensitive stuff into India. We should not critically comment about our own country in a public forum. But still, i guess we have the right to say things for sake of improvement. Since I am still in japan, i stuck unable to ask someone else to get one for me. |

You don't need to ship eReader to Inda. You just go to eReader.com and download whatever version of eReader you need/want.
