Because
a) It is trivial to strip the DRM out
b) Once you've done that you can unpack the LIT file and get at the actual HTML file inside it.
Then you have a standard non-restricted HTML file that can be read by or converted to any device you want.
You can also make any changes to the layout, font faces and sizes, etc... that you want.
You actually have the book text, rather than just the ability to use certain applications to view the book.
yes, as i mentioned in my first post, if you can't get epub, lit is a very good second choice. when epub is not available i buy lit files myself.

Yes, she'd have to use her XP install, through VM Ware, as you can't download secure Lit's in Mac OS. Once the Lit's had the DRM removed it can be view in Stanza on the Mac IIRC.

Ok, I'm back because I hit the wall again.

I found a book that I want to read. The ONLY format it is available in is Secure eReader (from Fictionwise). So, I've searched how I'm going to convert and strip the DRM. What am I missing? Is this even possible?

Thanks,
PB

What you are looking for is ereader2html and then Calibre to convert the HTML to LRF or ePub. Note that ereader2html is a Python script, but there are various threads here about how to use such scripts if you need help. Stripping the DRM from ebooks is generally thought to be illegal in some places, but it is hard to see who is hurt by doing so on ebooks you bought for personal use.

Hi Mrs.Babs! I'm also a new, happy, 505 owner.

I believe you can do what you're talking about. I purchased about 45 of the free books. After the purchase where it shows the bookshelf list of books you bought and can download (also found under My Ebooks in Account Settings), down at the bottom of the list is the option to 'check all' and 'Download all checked'. You can download up to 30 ebooks per page with only 2 clicks.

I hope that helps. Or, maybe you're talking about something else and I'm just not getting. it. That wouldn't be unusual for me

Actually, from what I've seen of the output of ereader2html, there is going to be some editing of the HTML involved or use Book Designer. The HTML you get is not all that nice to be honest.

Sadly, that only works if you can get all the books you are looking for on the same page to check them off. I was digging around by author and digging for a few things. Sadly, at no time did the drill down give me more than one I wanted to download at the same time.

No worries now that I'm pretty much into Calibre and not using the Sony Store for now.

Ok, off to try to figure out how to get the book I want to read -- without, you know, actually buying it in paperback....because that would seem so wrong now.

As others have mention, yes you can do this.

Have you checked other stores though? FW sometimes only has it in eReader while it's available elsewhere in easier to convert formats. There are some books still out there in only eReader format, but they're few and far between now. If FW doesn't have it I usually check Books on Board and if all else fails ebooks.com.

I misunderstood what you were talking about then. I was talking about downloading books you've already purchased. If it's not letting you put all of them into a cart at once, I'm wondering if you have 1 click shopping turned on. With that, each book has to be bought seperately. Turn that off, and as you browse the store you can click on books to add to the cart that look interesting, then go to the cart, delete ones you don't want, add others to your wish list for later, and then make a single purchase of the ones you want to buy right then.

I've checked, it appears it is the ONE book by an author that I love that doesn't come in any other format other than the eReader format.

So, I want to get it from eReader to HTML? That's what I missing, I kept trying to get it to LRF. URGH, my head spins with the options.

Thanks,
PB
