You don't understand e-ink.
Once e-ink displays something, it stays forever (OK, a long time) without additional power. It's like an etch-a-sketch. It takes energy to draw, and then the picture mostly stays put. The "flash" when you get a new e-ink page, corresponds to how you erase an etch-a-sketch picture to start over. Really.

No -- I understood. But it was intellectual. It was the reality of seeing the screen sitting there with an image even after it had been disconnected from the battery that caught my attention.
