Well...Californians tend to think they live in the best place in the world. (I know, I know, Paris....) Anyway, Texans tend to be unimpressed with anywhere, (except maybe Hawaii), and don't tend to humor other people's egos. (They're too busy humoring their own...) So Californians tend to look down upon Texan as uncouth yokels, and Texans consider them to be narcissist mirror watchers... Here's a real-life example from 1976.

I am looking at the mudpots in Lassen National Park in the Sierra moutains in 1976 when accosted by a californian.

Californian - Where are you from?

RSE - South Texas.

Californian - Isn't this (California) the best place you've ever been?

RSE - No.

Californian - (Taken Aback) Why not?

RSE - Too many people. I've just driven from Sacremento to San Francisco, up the coast to Oregon and back down the central valley and went up mountain here at Lassen. I never got out of sight of a house the whole time. I'm at 9,000 feet (3,000 meters) and still there's crowds.

Californian - Oh. (Kinda sidles off, acting like I had a contagious disease.)

Texans were deemed to be human (US Supreme Court ruling 1876) while there is no equivalent ruling concerning Californians. To a Californian the world ends at the state boarders, to a Texan ther is Texas and the colonies. Californians never raised a tax they didn't like, Texans never liked any taxes.

I think you get the picture.

I guess the major difference is that Texans want to live their life their way, while Californians are busy being missionaries, telling everyone else how they should live. (Is not Hollywood one big propaganda machine for the Californian mores?) Texans take it being told anything very poorly....

Let's just put it this way. I had roughly 45 years in California. I loved it. I miss it every day. The people I knew were open minded about things and very accepting of people's differences.

I've now had 4 years of Texas. I hate it. I wish I could get the hell out of here every day. Most of the people I have met here are incredibly closed minded and amazingly intollerant of people's differences. There are exceptions, but they are few and far between.

Such is life. Had I known more about Texas, I never would have moved here ... that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Sorry, Rickey, for the cultural clash. For that's what it is. Texas has a unique culture, and refuses to give it up. Funny how nobody has problems with there being a French culture, German culture, Latin American culture, (Allah be merciful) Islamic culture, Indian culture, ect... But a Texas Culture? Rather than the rest of the US saying that Texas has a unique culture and that's Ok, people move in from the outside and immediately start complaining that Texas is not like back home, and start trying to convert the local heathens. This has been going on for the last 100 years, and the local heathens tune the missionaries out, much to the annoyance of the outsiders. All they want is to left alone....

Lest you think this is just a Texas thing, our next door neighbor, Louisana, has it's own, highly unique, culture. You don't see Texans telling them how to live their lives...

I apologise for the rant. I never should have said anything.....

Actually, you have a point. People from California (born and bred native here) are used to being accepted, and accepting everything.

Once they move, they can't understand that maybe other people don't feel the same way. Or why.

If you move to a more conservative established area, and have a completely different lifestyle, you expect people to welcome you with open arms.

And when they don't, some people take it as an affront to their sense of self.

Are you *sure* you live in Texas and not some other planet?

Let it be known, The Republic of Texas started the war of words in this thread.

Well, I don't ever recall telling any of my neighbors how they should live, or what gods they should worship, or anything else they should or should not do.

I came here to be freaking left ALONE!!

Unfortunately, I have had people tell me that if I don't become a "good Christian" then I will never be welcome here.

I've had people order me to destroy my animals, because they don't like animals.

In other words, if that's what you call "Texas culture", then the "culture" of Texas can kiss my pale white behind.

At least in California people didn't go into shock when I told them I was Buddhist. No one ever called me a "slut" because I was wearing some lip gloss (until I moved here). No one made a fuss because I don't say the standard pledge to the flag .... here, they want me to say one to the state flag .... no, I'm serious .... And, I've never heard anyone from the California schools talking about taking "intelligent design" seriously.

I'm in the wrong state. I never ever should have moved to Texas. People warned me that the people in this part of the world would not take kindly to someone like me coming here .... and damned if they weren't right.

It really depends on which "valley" you are near. There are some valleys there (like the Yosemite) which are rather nice.
