The recipe system doesn't really have a way of inserting new content into feeds. Why do you want this functionality in any case?

This would be ideal for me. Currently I'm using apache to serve contents. I can just leave the calibre running to fetch & convert feeds, and point the "update" link to a script on the server that always direct to the newest feed. Does it make sense?

So is there other way I could add the link? I'm happy to hear other suggestions, as I just got the kindle yesterday and I'm trying to make it as easy as possible to update news/blogs on it without fees.
I know I'm cheap...

calibre will get support for emailing content to the kindle at which time you will be able to have it automatically email newly downloaded news to your Kindle.

that's cool. But I'm pretty sure that it's going to be fee based, because amazon charges a small fee for any attachment emailed directly to the kindle. That can add up quickly if there're a lot of contents to be emailed daily.

No one has ever been charged anything for their emails to their kindle account. The 10 cent fee has never been implemented.

From what I understand, amazon does not make a charge to your credit card until your balance reaches $3 dollars. So people who have not been charged might have not received more than 30 attachments yet.
Someone who has used a lot of this feature can clarify if I'm wrong.

Absolutely. And on the Amazon boards, there has been posts about this also. Again, no one has ever come forward, and said they have been charged.

Actually, I recall a post on this board not to long ago where someone said he has done WELL more than 30 emails to his Kindle and has yet to be charged.

Of course, that doesn't mean it won't start happening.

that's good to know. But it is not something I would like to rely on. They said they would charge for the service and we had agreed to pay, I wouldn't be surprised that one of those days someone gets a large bill from amazon.

ah, I got a solution.
since Calibre can take several feeds for any recipe, i just wrote a tiny XHTML which reside on my computer(my content server) and contains only an "update" link, which points to the newest news/feed/blog's MOBI file, then added it to the top of the feed list.

works great and now I can transfer & update everything easily & wirelessly from anywhere! anyone who's interested can try it.

is there anything new on accessing the content server from the Kindle browser?

I am getting the same old "There was an error encountered when processing your request."

I checked the various thing specified above and no cigar. it works from a different computer over the internet so the content server is accessible

Smile hacks to get the content server working

I have been trying various hacks to get the content server working and have partially succeeded. It was really hard work.

The basic thought is to use a proxy server that can handle AJAX.

After a lot of search and trial and error I went with http://www.internetbypass.com/

some screen shots attached.

The only problem is that the book download links dont work

some observations about the book download-
  • The urls are ok (e.g. "http://???.???.143.119:8080/get/mobi/The%20adventures%20of%20Tom%20Sawyer_2433.mobi" ) but the actual file doesnt get downloaded.
  • If the format is not supported I get the usual error about which types can be downloaded by the basic web
  • when i select a supported book type link(e.g mobi) it just refreshes. but i notice that the downloaded bytes in the top show the same same amount as the books specified size. so it seems to download the book. Also it takes different times based on different sizes of books
  • dont know why the books wont show up as downloaded

I Need help. Almost got it working . When I get then working I will post a proper tutorial for not tech users.

There is a non Ajax version of the page you can use with your Kindle at /mobile

This was designed specifically for the Kindle, so it should work.

@kovid thanks very much. turns out calibre detects the user agent and serves the mobile version even if we dont use /mobile

I feel silly but i am conjuring up a tutorial for the common user to use this feature productively. sp with kindle and its limitation on ports in url. may be kindle v2.5 will support that
