A few older readers and SW display the TOC, but do not preserve links... so, in those cases, you would have to scroll through all material to get to the story.

That's good to know. In that case, though, you'd have to page through everything anyway - including the TOC and anything else. So, given that I'd have to page through the summary regardless, I'd probably want it right at the beginning.
