[QUOTE=Mr.Magoo;358119]Yesterday, I had a Cybook on my hands. The light wasn't very good but I think I could read well on it. I also see a Papyre (spanish rebranding of the Hanlin) in another shop, but it had no charge, so I couldn't test it. I'll go back this shop in a few days.
[quote]

The screen on the CyBook and the Hanlin is identical, so the only difference will lie in the "software" of the two machines in terms of how large a font they let you select.

Thank you very much AuPhinger for your Spanish welcome (do you speak Spanish?) and good wishes.
Thank you too HarryT.
My English isn't so good, but WordReference helps a lot,

Just another question I forgot yesterday. As I said, I prefer "reversed colors" (white text on dark background). Would it be possible with the e-ink technology?, and, is there any device with this feature?.

Thank you again.

I assume yes, in any case it's possible for Hanlin V3. But the eyes don't get tired like that? Maybe that's the reason you can't read for a lengthy duration

I also have rotten retinas like Magoo, and the inverted colors are best. Try it on your computer with a Word document, black background with white letters, and let me know your opinion from a "normal" vision perspective. (pun intended) I'm curiious to know if you get the same comfortable feeling as I get from it, like suddenly you eyes relax and you don't have to squint.

The inverted theme is sort of the standard for low vision.

Having worked in video (in a past life) and doing some experimentation and thinking about this, the white on black is usually easier to read with poor vision. The reason is that the white characters seem (or tend) to ballon outward, giving an apparent larger character. In contrast to this, the black characters tend to shrink into themselves, giving an apparent smaller character.

Whether this is a real or just a perceived change, I don't know but the effect for human eyes is there.

I enjoy reading eReader books with that software on my computer. It has a theme called "denim" which has a dark denim background and white text. It is just perfect. I wish there was some simple way to invert colors on the 505.

Hmmmm. Is the "natural" state of e-ink the whitish screen, or does it have to generate that whitish screen from a basic black blankness?

It’s similar to right-handed to left-handed ratio. Many scientific experiments indicate that black letters on white is easier for the majority (it’s not random that Google, Wikipedia, MS, Intel, AMD, Amazon use that scheme for their websites). Anyway, our eyes are not optimized to read actually and poor vision complicates matters even more. Myself, I find black on white more natural and easy to read; trying the white on black now on Hanlin and letters appear to lose visibility, like slayda mentioned the apparent shrinking of the white letters is quite perceptible. Anyhow, we can’t have a solution that fits all, some find easier the white on black but apparently the inverse way is more “natural”.

It works like paper, there is the white surface and "paint" it with black e-ink.

Nope... it is just a matter of which molecule is in which position. They could do an invert mode without problem. Although, I don't think it would work well due to the contrast of the screen.

There is also a big movement among developers to use what is called a "dark" theme. The reason being that the dark background colors project less light and cause less eye strain. Also, there is more contrast between the black background and the colored text.

Here's an example of a theme I use in my textmate and in visual studio IDEs. I like it much better than the default themes with white backgrounds.

I would do almost anything to have a reader with that theme! Except for maybe Ariel font. It jumps out at me, and I could read the smallish letters easily, whereas the ordinary text on the site itself was just a gray blur.

Hey Penguin! Now that you are a MOD, any chance of "accidentally" switching this whole website to that theme?

dear god please no !!!

despite what some might think, it's actually MUCH more tiring for the eyes to read light text on a dark background for any length of time, with some exceptions.

however, there is an element of truth here : the overwhelming majority of screens have the brightness level turned up waaaaaaaaay too far, and that equals big ouchies for the eyes. turn down the brightness on your monitor and turn up the contrast a bit and you'll see it's much better. (and you'll see much better too. )

DixieGal, if you are using Mozilla (might also work with Internet Explorer) you can go into the tools -> Options menu. On the "Content" tab, hit the "Colors" button and you can set your foreground & background colors. This may help. If not, it'll give you something to entertain yourself with when you get caught up reviewing the new posts on MR.
