What do you think of the electronic reading?
I love it, before I started reading electronically, I always had a book in my bag (and if I didn't have a bag with me, in my coat pocket. But that meant I could only read light books (as in physical weight), as I'd have to carry it with me. My PDA is much more handy to carry around and I even have a selection of books to choose from. Going on holiday always meant standing in front of the bookcase, selecting my books, never knowing how much time I'd have to read and not wanting to bring too many or not enough books (as we were always backpacking, space was at a premium). That problem has completely gone as I now have my entire collection with me.

So, the PRS-505 is sold since november... And when you ask for e-books, only a minority know what it is (something like less than 10%)...For the moment, the sold are very very thin (less than 10 000 for a country where live more than 65 millions of people), and a large proportion of the purchasers are people who are enjoy with technology, but they're not really read books on it.
It's right that some parts of the e-books 's technology are french, but the habits of e-reading are definitively a recent phenomen for the french readers (and maybe the european).

I've found ebook devices to be overall more practical than p-books and to some degree, my reading choices are reflected in what is available as electronic files. I wish I could get books in my own language though.

Ph.D. Software Engineer -- I can't tell which category that fits in, as your categories don't make much sense by typical US terminology.

What e-book do you have?
Sony PRS-700, Sony PRS-500. I previously owned an RCA REB-1100.

How long do you have e-book?
1 month 3 months
2 months 4 months
More (specify): I've owned the 700 since Christmas; the 500 for a bit over 2 years. Before that, I owned the REB-1100 for 5 years.

Is this a personal purchase?
Yes No

Is this a professional purchase?
Yes No

Did you receive it as a gift?

Yes No
Yes for the 700; no for the 500. No for the prior REB-1100.

Are you satisfied with your e-book?
Not at all satisfied Somewhat satisfied
Satisfied Very satisfied

If not satisfied, can you tell us why?

How many books have you downloaded?
- than 3 books
3 to 10 books
10 to 20 books
20 to 50 books
50 to 100 books
Over than 100 books
800+ and counting. And yes, I've read them all.

On average, how many hours per week do you use your e-book?
1 hour 2 hours
3 hours 4 hours
5 hours More than 5 hours (specify)Probably around 10 hours/week; it gets nearly all my reading time.

Which database do you use to download your digital book?

Primarily Baen's Webscriptions site (for commercial books); Mobileread (this site) for public domain. Fictionwise and a few others also get a bit of my money. Strictly speaking, "database" is the wrong term. I think you mean "website" or "online vendor" or something like that.

Get you more works free (public domain) or paid work?
Free books
Paid workBy a very wide margin.

Where do you use most often your e-book?
Public transport
House
Job

What types of books do you read?
Fiction <===mostly
Current events
School books
Practical life (kitchen, garden, health ...)
Social science (philosophy, psychology, economy ...)
Scientific and technical books
Dictionaries, encyclopedias
Other (specify)
I use the eBook reader almost exclusively for fiction. The various non-fiction is mostly dead-tree-format.

How would you define your e-book?
Handy Yes No
Practice Yes No
Comfortable Yes No
Useful Yes No
Readable Yes No
Esthetic Yes No
Revolutionary Yes No
Economic Yes No
No answer to "revolutionary" because I'm not sure. "Economic" is a yes only because my primary supplier (Baen) is sane about prices, so I've saved far more money buying books than I have spent buying e-Book-reading hardware. If I bought elsewhere, my answer would be a resounding "NO!"

What do you think of the electronic reading?
I prefer buying books in bits. If I had a completely free choice (no issues of DRM, availability, etc.) I would purchase paper books only for the very few authors who are my absolute favorites. Otherwise eBooks are a complete win -- easier storage, can take dozens with me when I travel, instant gratification when purchasing, etc.

It's right that some parts of the e-books 's technology are french, but the habits of e-reading are definitively a recent phenomen for the french readers (and maybe the european).

I'll grant you that Sony hasn't had a large European market penetration until recently - but that's Sony's fault. And I'm glad that the French are learning to enjoy reading ebooks on e-ink devices. I was just pointing out that there are other ways to enjoy reading ebooks - desktop computers, laptop computers, large-screen cellphones and pda devices - so the idea of "reading" from an electronic device - for pleasure - shouldn't have been all that new and unusual.

What do you think of the electronic reading?
I prefer to buy books in electronic format. I miss the library, though, so I may get a sony which can read that format. I wouldn't get rid of my kindle, though.
Thank you very much time you devoted to this questionnaire.
