If my post came across as a shot at you, I'm very sorry. Your post actually inspired me to start a thread and wiki page to clear up a lot myths and confusion surrounding the Kindle.

There was plenty of educational content there for you as well, if you could get beyond the perceived "shots." I wouldn't take things personally...this is a helpful forum.

Ricky is a her, not a him, and is apt to let people know how she feels.

She may not be the most subtle poster, but hasn't a malicious bone in her body.

She's also a very intelligent person and sometimes doesn't have patience with those of us who can't keep up.

If you stick around long enough, you'll come to value her as much as we do......and we all hope you stick around.

I agree. There was plenty of informational content in her post, but it could've been presented without the sarcasm. Maybe it is simply custom for her to reply in that fashion, I don't know her so I wouldn't know.

The thing is, I am new to this forum (and to forums in general). Help and insight is all I am looking for. So thank you to everyone that posted.

And no, daffy4u, your comments were perfectly fine

(whispers: I thought Ricky was a little harsh too.) On the whole, this is a non-arguing and very helpful Forum. So do stick around and let us show you our good side too.

Oh, and Ricky has Kindle(s). There are LOTS of Sony 505 owners here who will agree with you 100%. They're both great! (I'm a Kindle person too - sorry!)

I do plan on purchasing a Kindle as well (just not immediately). My girlfriend has been wanting one as well, and it never hurts to have 2 e-book readers in the house.

Our vision is to have every book ever printed, in any language, all available in under 60 seconds on Kindle. We won't stop until we get there."

....

Sony hasn't made that kind of a promise or proposal, and they never will.

After a day of panicking and self-pity, I realized that not all was lost (Lost is an amazing show by the way... sorry, off topic). I was still able to purchase e-books from different online stores, and maybe one day sony will decide to add more content as well. But until that day comes, I think I will be satisfied with my PRS-505 (even though I would love to have the Kindle 2) because it does what it is meant to do and it supports multiple formats. And besides, I can always purchase the Kindle 2 with my tax returns if I want and gift my PRS-505 to my mother, who has been wanting to borrow it when she goes on trips.
Don't worry be happy and enjoy your Sony PRS-505.

There isn't a right or wrong choice and we spend a lot of time on these forums debating the differences between the devices. I wouldn't worry about Amazon's vision statement. All of the current generation of electronic readers will be in landfills by the time they get there.

For what it's worth my vision is:

Any book ever printed, in any language, from any source, in an open format and library, without DRM, all delivered for my reading pleasure in under 60 seconds.

Great vision. I would like to see that, too. I'm sure it'll get there, but not for a long time.

The research that I did was from a consumer's perspective (who was completely new to the market). After checking out these forums, i have learned that there are plenty of ways to get different formats of books to work for all e-book readers (I am currently using calibre, book designer {though i don't understand it too well yet}, and a few of the ABC converters).

The fact is, there is way too much information out there about the Kindle and you never know what is true or false unless you own the product. With that being said, how is someone supposed to shop for a product like that? I had to take what I believed to be true and false and separate the info myself. Most of the info I took with me were from the actual sites that the products are offered on, then I looked at other sites for confirmation.

How was I supposed to interpret it all? Not everyone is an expert on the subject.

(And no, RickyMaveety, I don't ride the bus. I was simply using that as an example. And why so much hostility?)
How is someone supposed to shop for a product like that? Easy, in the case of the Kindle, you buy one. You use it for a month and if you don't like it, you return it.

You also do a few Google searches, such as "maximum SD card size for Kindle" .... or you do what I did .... call customer service for both companies (Sony and Amazon) and grill their asses over the coals.

Why the hostility?? Because I am really quite sick and tired of people making massive misstatements here about the Kindle. Every time someone posts in the manner that you did (which assumes as fact that the Kindle is tied to the Amazon store, or that SD size is limited to 2GB), then some other person is going to read that post and assume that what you are saying is correct.

Mind you, JSWolf does the same thing constantly, and he really should know better. He simply hates Amazon. So, I'd be more likely to be hostile to him rather than you, since you only posted out of ignorance.

But really, there are ways to research a purchase. With the Kindle, there is an absolute 30-day return policy. There still is. What better way to decide on buying something than to try it out? Buy or borrow a large SD card to see if it will work in it (I did exactly that, and it worked beautifully).

However, I would simply love it if people who don't know the product would not post incorrect information about the product. What it boiled down to was that you bought the Sony because you liked the looks of the Sony. Fine ... post that. All your other reasons were not based on fact and, in fact, might prevent someone who would otherwise really love the Kindle (I) from buying one.

As for the Kindle (II) ... Amazon chose to get rid of many of the features I liked, and I don't happen to care for the look of the new device. So, you run out and get one if you decide you like it better than your Sony, but from my perspective, Amazon took a great product and made it merely mediocre.

I love Ricky's posts for their sheer directness: she says what she thinks and takes no prisoners. But... might we not cut a bit of slack for newer members who are not so familiar with the way the technology works? (i.e. let's be nice: we don't want to sound like one of the DRM ranters.)

We all have a tendency to be fonder of some devices than others (--usually the ones that we own). It's fortunate that there is a choice. I'm in the UK and only wish that I had more of a choice. I might even have chosen the Kindle, had it been available here. Or maybe not. As it is, I'm never going to be able to choose the Kindle I.

So you Americans are to be envied. You have a much wider choice than the rest of us.

I'm in the same boat. I compared the Sony PRS-505 to the Kindle 1.0 and bought the Sony, without realizing the Kindle 2.0 was on the way. I'm still happy with my decision. The only reason to prefer the Kindle, (for me anyway), was the availability and price of books. Fictionwise has relieved much of the pain.

If Sony abandons the reader, I can add my PRS-505 to my collection of Betamax tapes. Given Sony's sales and marketing overseas, (in relation to the US), they seem to be flooding the foreign markets prior to the arrival of Kindle. I suspect the Sony reader will survive for a year or two at least.
