There are numerous "external" lights available, ranging from "clip-on" booklights (which many people use) to "covers" with built-in lighting.
I use a mini lantern. Got a 6 pack of them during a wootoff for $15. The light is easier on my eyes than most booklights (the tiny lights hurt my eyes). Plus they are seriously killer for power outages.

This guy seems entitled to the "Perfect Device," and doesn't want to lower his standards. When he finds out there isn't one, he resorts to name calling. AWESOME!

Better than what? A PDA? Hmm - how about running for a couple of weeks active use without needing recharging? How about being easily readable in daylight?

Think of them as books rather than PDAs or torches - can you read a paperback in the ambient light conditions where you'd be using them? If so, then fine, if not, then yes, you'll need an additional source of light... just like you would for a paperback...

These days, they all allow you to copy new content on via 'native' USB operations in addition to other methods & most support various formats as well as having ways of converting others to those formats.
