Thanks for the heads up Harry. I had no idea that they were already available for the Kindle much less that they had them in collections.

While I was growing up, my dad always talked about Horatio Hornblower. He was just part of my upbringing. I've never read any of the books though.

When I was in high school, I studied Latin for 5 years and at one stage we were introduced to Horatio. Before I really thought about it, I asked if that were Horatio Hornblower.

Now the teacher (known to be a bit of psychopath) just smiled and said no it wasn't. However, the rest of the class had not heard the name Horatio Hornblower as a child growing up. They thought I'd said something very funny (with the last name being as it is). So I sat in a class with people laughing, out of control. I didn't understand it at all, because the constant use during my upbringing meant that I never questioned the name in my mind, never heard anything out of it other than the name.

Of course, eventually, the psychopath teacher flew into a rage and smashed a clock - he may have hit one of the students, I can't quite remember, and it seemed like I was the only one to which he was not directing his anger.

Incidentally, this was my favourite teacher. His violence was "ignored" by the powers-that-be and most of the students developed an appreciation of him even if occasionally hit. The violence became part of his shtick, his teaching methodology. And it worked.

Anyway - that's hopelessly off-topic, but perhaps even vaguely interesting.

I believe the character of Horatio Hornblower was also part of the inspiration for the character of Captain Kirk of Star Trek when Gene Roddenberry was creating his cultural icon. I seem to remember Mr. Roddenberry mentioning something of the sort in an interview I saw on TV once.

And he was a direct inspiration for David Weber's "Honor Harrington" character, as he himself states. Even down to the choice of initials .

These omnibus editions aren't available in the US. For US readers there are individual editions of the books for $6 each put out by someplace called eNet Press.

But not The Gun, I see (which is a relief, because I've just bought it as a paperback).

Sadly, Harry, those omnibus editions appear to be UK and apparently Canada only. And the individual books that ARE available for the US are not well done from the comments. (I can't see Canadian Kindle books because Amazon sees me as a US Amazon customer, but I can see Canadian Kobo books, and I see them there, but for $2.50 more than the Amazon price. )

There is, however, a collection of 5 Hornblower short stories available as Hornblower Addendum, that I'm not seeing anywhere else.

And looking further at those books at Amazon, I *suspect* that they are probably not legal.

According to the eNet Press website it's run by George and John Forester which are the names of C.S. Forester's children.

Ok. To bad they couldn't afford an editor/proofreader.
