What I may do is purchase one of the original ones for my sister since the price will go down.
My 505 is just fine right now and I truly dont see a reason to purchase another one just because it is newer....

Richard,

The Kindle is completely open to DRM-free MobiPocket books.

There doing it at Library on Feb 9th. Isn't this also the O'Riley publisher event... or is that just concurrently at the same place?

I don't think so. I noticed with the Topaz book I read that the further you get into the book the longer each page turn takes. It is annoy as heck and now that I know about this I won't be buying an more Topaz books. There are to many other books that I want to read anyway.

It depends. Right now, i have my entire library of e-books on the MkI and I like that a lot. If they don't have mongo memory or SD support, I won't get the MkII. Also, folders. If they have folders, I'd be really tempted.

Mine's sped up. The first few days, it was on average 4-5 seconds to turn a page with occasionally having to wait up to 10. Now it's only slightly longer than a regular page turn and I'm about 2/3 through the book. That's why I figured it must be indexing its little heart out because something had to account for that slowdown. Poor prioritizing of tasks if that's true, though.

If they implement folders, but not in the current model's firmware, they would deserve my scorn and not an upgrade purchase from me.

I've heard the folders would only require a simple software upgrade available to all Kindle folders? opinions?

I just can't imaging it taking "days" to index something. I mean what are you talking about here... 2GB SD card? The Kindle CPU isn't all that fast, sure, but 2GB of data isn't that much either. I'm to lazy to do any calculations here but the thing indexing for days just can't be possible. Unless you are constantly changing the date every few minutes causing it to need to do some reindexing.

It was a few hundred documents. About half books and half recipes.

Ah... it just can't take days to index this. And, the indexing does happen as a background non-priority task. Alas, there is no activity monitor for the CPU. Perhaps Igorsky can spread some light on this as he has gained shell access and can watch and see what is happening on the thing.

It doesn't make sense to me either. Luckily it's over and my book is back to being tolerable. I still HATE topaz. The font isn't nearly as readable as the native font and there have been some horrible errors. A couple pages had a line or two of overlapping text and one even had a huge chunk taken out.

Yeah... the Topaz books drive me nuts. Barely legible about half the time. Not noticed the slowness, but the bad editing is sufficient. It's like reading a bad photocopy.

Yes, Harry, but Mobi is just another Amazon venture. How about being open to ePub? That's what I want at minimum.
