Yes I have thought about the bad screen quality of the 700 being bad for my eyes. I saw this YouTube review though a while back that made me think it would be ok. The picture seems very clear, and it was only when I compare the 700 with the 505 that I noticed a degradation. I think the Cybook looks like a good choice. I'm going to wait till this Amazon press release to see how the Kindle 2 fares before I make my final decision.

I'm new and don't really know how the karma system works, but I'll certainly try and give some to all the helpful people in the thread.

Are you located in the US? If you are go to a Borders store and check it out (but call first, sometimes the units are dead). They'll have both the 700 and 505. If you can, check out the different titles on each. Occasionally a book will have a smaller font than most others. On those, zooming to Medium looks like small, and Large looks like Medium.

Unfortunately not. I'm from Australia. I have a friend who has parents in the US which is how I'll ultimately buy a device if I can't find a good deal on ebay.

Oh bummer. There is a thread on here somewhere where people offer to show you devices in their part of the world, you might want to check it out.

Target does the same thing. Silly. I saw one at Target and it was dead. Every time I've been to my Borders they are working though. I've just heard sometimes they aren't. It's probably an employee thing, and I'm sure if someone asked they'd get it working (plus a lot of the employees have them also).

Thanks for all the help. I've reconsidered my choices and have realised that the annotations feature that the PRS-505 and Cybook lack is something I really need, leaving me with either the PRS-700 or the Kindle. Both of these zoom appropriately. I'm having a go now at seeing how easy it is to make Mobipocket ebooks with the Mobipocket Creator out of my university material, for use with the Kindle (after some conversion). If this is too annoying I'll go for the 700.

One thing that I don't think is solvable is the readability of the menus on any of the devices. I think I'll need to spend some time learning how to get around the device with someone else helping me to get familiar and comfortable with working it. I did this with my iPhone and it took me a few days of using it before I could get around the device comfortably.

Well you just have to think with the new Kindle, unless you can get your hands on the older one.. you no longer have the SD slot for extra books. The screen is still crisp like the 505 though.

I was at our Borders last Saturday and they have a display with the 505 and 700... I strongly advise against the 700 is you need something easier to read for your eyes.

The 700 is really blurry to me in person.. I had to get twice as close as I would to my 505 to actually read the text on the screen without giving myself a headache from trying to ignore the blur.

Though I still admit the touch screen thing is really nice and I liked playing with that.. otherwise it's just to blurry for people with bad vision to use.

Yeah you seem to be right , pretty unanimous verdict on poor quality of the 700. I just have to get my head around how I can get my own content on the Kindle. I've got a hold of Mobipocket Creator and Book Designer, so hopefully between the two of them and all the bits of information on the forum and wikipedia page I can get up to speed.

The 700 isn't really that bad. That's what my husband has. I have the 505. Don't get me wrong. The 505 definitely has better contrast. But the 700 is very readable. We're both happy with our choices. He reads a lot more technical books, so the zoom and highlighting feature works well for him. I read more fiction/novels so don't really need the zoom/highlighting.
