Given the actual amount of memory in a reader, the price increases are out of line with the amount of memory they use.

Where is it stated/claimed that they doubled the RAM in the Basic? I haven't seen that anywhere, just the component cost increase.

We're supposed to believe a Kindle needs 16Gb of storage? They could cut that back to 1Gb and it would still be massive overkill for 99% of their users. Thinking about using the Kindle's library navigation user interface for 10,000+ books makes me feel faint. I'd say it's usable for 20 books, and maybe tolerable (barely) for 100 books if you're very patient and accepting of bad situations. They could make a special high-storage "Kindle for the 1%" and sell that at a hefty price for those who actually want it.

I’d like to know that too. The basic is painfully slow for downloading and syncing. I only have one as it lives in my handbag. I would pay more for one with the speed of the 12th Paperwhite or Colorsoft.

You would need 1GB for the OS, 1GB for working ram, and 2GB for books and cache.

On Amazon UK, the Paperwhite just went from £169.99 to £199.99. The Kindle Basic and Scribe have not jumped in price yet.
