Hi legolas and welcome to MobileRead!

I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble with your reader. I hope you can get it repaired. Here is the link for sony support in Europe. If you go to the page, there is a further link to take you to the repair/contact page. You will need to enter your country details. Good luck!

Vertical stripe sounds like a controller or connection failure, not broken substrate, so should be covered by the warranty.

Hi! In this link, I write my country, I write the model of my reader (PRS-505) and later I select: "Repair & Something else". When I select this last link, I go back to the page that you wrote.

Thanks for your help.

I´m waiting for Waterstones answer and looking for Sony Europe mail. Tomorrow I´ll ask a friend who works in Mediamarkt how they fix this problem with other readers.

Hi legolas, I'm going to explain here my similar experience.
My PRS-505 had a faulty screen, in two weeks I had vertical lines and a blurred zone on the top-right edge of my screen. I thought that this would be covered by the Sony warranty, but... NO

I sent my PRS-505 to the Sony support service and they wrote me telling that the screen was phisically broken and that it was my fault (THAT WAS NOT TRUE), and that i had to pay 189 euros to repair it.

I felt really frustrated, I left my e-reader on the Sony support because they sold me a defective unit and didn't want to repair it.

My conclusion was simple, I will NEVER buy another Sony gadget anoymore.
