You can get drm-free epub versions of magazines through PressReader, they don’t have all magazines but that is an option in case they have what you want.

Turns out Pressreader doesn't have the magazines I am getting from Kindle Unlimited. The publisher does offer them in ePub and PDF formats if I subscribe directly. I am checking with them to confirm I understand their pricing. If Amazon doesn't fix this problem I will be able to get them directly from the publisher.

I just took a longer look at Amazon's list of Kindle Unlimited magazines and found that they FINALLY have the current issues of Analog and Asimov's available.

It also appears that they may have actually heard the complaints about the page image formats they were previously making available. There is now a ToC and the format is definitely an eBook version of .kfx this time. The size is also back to a reasonable size of 1.4MB and 1.2MB respectively. Converting them to .azw3 format reduces the size further.

Assuming that they continue in this manner the worst may be past, but it is no longer as convenient as the magazines must be specifically located and downloaded as opposed to simply appearing in my pw4 when they are available. They are also appearing alongside books as opposed to in their folder.

I am also going to investigate if it might be more economical and convenient to obtain the magazines directly from the publisher, as that is my major reason for the Kindle Unlimited subscription.

I will also be interested to hear if they are going to an eBook format for all magazines or only those that they get complaints about.
