This is a common case where people put their own random adjectives on things and then build their stance by assuming that the regulations enforce those adjectives. Easy/easily are not in the regulations in regards to the battery removal. It can still be made very difficult to replace the battery, including full disassembly of the device and replacing one-time use adhesives and glues, and still be inside of the new regulation. It just can't require unobtanium tools, or require thermal or solvents to remove. It's an interesting loophole that Apple recently introduced adhesive strips that use electricity to release.

I guess "removeable battery" is an adjective. (isn't it?)

I'm not sure I would. On one hand, sure, it would be convenient for replacing a battery. But on the other hand, ... a 1" thick Kindle to accommodate the compartment and door access? I'm not so sure anyone would buy that.
While non-user-replaceable batteries may have some manufacturer cost savings involved, I'm betting this issue was move of a space and weight saving measure. And then manufacturers probably took the primary space/weight savings reason and expanded that thinking, "How can we make this a bit less user friendly, so they'll choose to buy a new device from us rather than repair an old device?" I'm sure that kind of thinking played into it somewhat, but probably only as a secondary parasitic thought compared to the primary space/weight issue. |

That's what I was thinking too. A "be careful what you wish for" kind of thing.

My smart phone is not even close to 1" thick and I just pop the back with a guitar pick like tool (and the battery is of a higher capacity because of the color screen w/backlight.
I replaced the battery in my K4nt . The hard part was getting the battery. You can't buy it on Amazon even tho Amazon has batteries from that dealer for OTHER devices. The 'kit' included a tiny screw driver and a plastic pry tool. |

I replaced the battery in my old kindle keyboard so I could fill it up before they removed support recently. That kit also came with a pry tool and couple of small screwdrivers, but the screwdrivers were garbage and I had to use my own precision screwdriver.
I don't know if that would satisfy the legal requirements. The battery was quite easy to swap out, with a couple of regular, if tiny, crosshead screws holding it in place. The issue for me was that prying the back off without chewing it up was impossible, so I can't regard that as properly replaceable. I don't really care for the obsession with thinness and no bezels on phones. Everyone ends up adding a case since the devices are annoying to hold, and the lack of bezel means you are accidentally touching the screen all the time. Never mind that my old phone had room for a pulsing light that told me when I had a message, where my new phone I just have to keep waking it up to check. |

The Nokia N9500 phone is about 1" thick, but has a QWERTY keyboard and practically a phone in the lid.
I have an Android 5.1.1 Huawei that is as thin or thinner than any Kindle and same thickness as an almost new TCL. There is a little notch near one corner for a finger nail. Cover pops off and you can pop out the battery, swap SD card or SIM. FM Radio, & 3.5mm jack. Micro USB O2G. Even without SIM it's a nice music player, FM Radio and what ever apps loaded before it lost Playstore. As it's less than 8.x Google/Alphabet won't be blocking 3rd party APKs via USB. A replaceable battery isn't hard. The 30 m waterproof watch has user replaceable cell. We are going backwards. Cory Doctorow's word for it is now in some dictionaries. The Electricity Smart meters in Ireland use 2G/EDGE, so I risked buying a 2004 Nokia N9500. Still connects to Web (HTTP only) using Opera. Voice & SMS work. Battery easily replaced and available (used in many phones). The original 2004 battery still goes for several days. There is even Mobipocket on it! No Apple or Google surveillance. Nokia's first with WiFi and their last true Commmunicator due to internal Politics. Instead of upgrading S80 to touch they went backwards to S60. |

This is a positive step for sustainability; reducing electronic waste by making batteries replaceable will definitely benefit consumers in the long run.
