My recommend for the OP is to install the Flatpak version of calibre it should be supported from the system software installer.
It should be updated to calibre 9.10.0 this week--the calibre Flatpak maintainer seem to wait to make sure no issues turn up with new versions.

The flatpak is definitely a reasonable option (and more in line with Bazzite's philosophy). I initially had the flatpak version installed, myself. But, since it isn't official, I eventually worked up the nerve to see if the official, isolated install of native Calibre worked on Bazzite. It does, and it's easy to do (once I knew it was there). So, that's where I am now.

EDIT: But then along with the Bazzite (a new, containerized, immutable, atomic distribution) is new and therefore "bad" argument, we're back to flatpak (a new, universal application distribution methodology) is new and therefore "bad" argument.

At work we used several immutable Linux installs for servers where the pain of making changes was balanced against the increased security. For personal use, I would not recommend any immutable Linux distro since most personal uses involve installing programs and peripherals. Possibly a belief influenced by too many decades of using computers.

Even better idea is to install a version of Linux that actually works and then install calibre from the calibre website.
