Apple was not the first company to produce a mobile phone without a user replaceable battery since I have vague memories of a Motorola PEBL phone as the first phone I used that did not have a user replaceable battery.

Apple may have popularized the idea but originate it? That they did not do.

There is a lot of things Apple did not original such as the iPad and the GUI.

You can sideload apps on a Kobo. You just need an app that will execute with it's Linux OS that is able to interface to an eInk display and whatever input the Kobo allows. Please note that neither Kobo or Kindle eInk ereaders run Android or a derivative though Amazon seems to be moving their Kindles in the direction of their Android fork.

Eventually I think Amazon is going to remove their Android variant is favor of this closed and locked down Vega OS. Amazon already started doing it on new Firesticks.

That makes as much sense as a DVD player having apps. Little more sense than a fridge or toaster.

An ereader is a single use appliance. It's phones, Tablets, netbooks, chromebooks, laptops etc that should be easy to install to outside of a store. Sideloading is a term that should be boycotted as Google now suggests it's evil.
Google is locking down Android like iOS. MacOS and Win11 are drifting to walled gardens too.

Well, at least you can still install any Windows program on Win11. It doesn't need to be approved by Microsoft or available in their store.

The day you can no longer do that will probably be the day I ditch Windows.

As for Android, there aren't any other options, unfortunately - iOS is no better. And there are no Linux phones that I know of.

Back before smart TVs were the norm, I had a Sony LCD TV that was not smart. Back then I was doing some beta testing for Skype and we were given a Panasonic Blu-Ray planer that has Skye as an app. It also had other apps on it such as Netflix. It worked rather well. There was a camera that went with it for use with Skype.

If you are located in the EU, you can install alternate App Stores on iOS/iPadOS.

Good to know, but you can't sideload an app, like you can sideload an apk. file on Android, can you?

I still have a dumb TV, nearly 12 years old now. I do most of my rare watching on my laptop, so haven't bothered to replace my TV. It has a good screen for something so old - not 4K, but still very nice, and I watch so little TV that I have no need for a newer device.

Yeah, if they get their fingers out of their behinds and actually release a new Libra B&W !!!

You can't side load. But at least in the EU you're not stuck with just the Apple App Store.

A Libra BW with a battery easily replaceable enough hat my mother-in-law can replace the battery would be great.
