In my experience with my Kobo Clara usually get at most only a year before the usb cable will quit working with the Kobo but will still work with the kindle. So a new good usb cable should be tried.

My system: Linux Mint 22.3 - Cinnamon

It has always worked.
As have all my computers; Linux Mint is a very good operating system.

I've used the same cable with my Kobos for over 6 years now. But then I'm on Windows.

Do you have NicjelMenu installed? If so does your configuration include any entries for USB connection in it ?

Nothing appears.
Laptop is working perfectly.
Linux Mint 22.3 cinnamon.
Linux Mint will not detect your Kobo until you tap connect on the pop up Computer Detected window on your Kobo. If this box does not appear when you connect your Kobo, but your Kobo charges, you probably have a damaged/defective cable that no longer supports data but does support charging. This is more likely than a damaged usb-c port on the Kobo. Please try a different cable that supports data.

Easiest way to know if your computer knows the Kobo is there is either type lsusb in the terminal, or open the Disks program. The Kobo will be listed as Linux File-Stor Gadget.

Solution was very simple - and I wish Ihad not done the many things I did yesterday. Someone must have left a cable at my house that looked like a kobo cable, in that it had usbc at ot one end and usba at the other. But it was not a kobo cable. Sometimes I used that one and sometimes the proper one. So it seemed that kobo connected on some computers and not others, whatever operating system was on it. I apologise for using your time, yet i am grateful for your response. Please forgive me.

It might have been a power only cable. There is nothing special about the cable supplied by Kobo.

I know the issue is solved, but I'm expanding on this answer for future readers.

Sometimes on my Mac, my Kobo doesn't connect to Calibre or show up on the Desktop when I plug it in. I have the "Connect to USB" menu item configured in NickelMenu, and selecting this allows the connection to be completed. There must be some timing issue or something.

As you've read, it was the cable. Have you tried other USB-C cables?

Glad the problem is solved. I find it convenient to wrap a piece of red colored electrical tape around my Kobo cables, like a little collar, so that I can easily distinguish them from the other cables I have lying around in the 'cable drawer.

One thing to remember is don't tightly wrap, crimp or bend your cables. Loosely coil them.
