I tried it with the metadata.db you sent me. Changing the title of one book then running check library. Worked as expected. Then I tried adding a tag to several hundred books and then running check library. Also worked as expected. Though I did do the tests with calibre 9 not 8.16.2

Try running calibre as

calibre --ignore-plugins

and see if the problem still happens.

That is a good idea. Install the calibre 9.1 portable, copy the library and see if the problem still exists.

Thank you to Jon, I've solved the problem (sorry to have bother you). Defender was the culprit, it looks like it took a lot of time analyzing the folder and it was blocking something.

It's no bother at all. I'm happy I could help. I had a similar problem on my slow Surface Laptop 2. A video app from our TV provider needed to be ignored so it would not be scanned or any downloads.
