This is me, because while I don't buy tons of ebooks, some, but not tons, I do read library books a lot, and those are delivered as kepub. While everything I sideload (except a rare book that either has a ton of footnotes, or has maps) goes on as epub.
Personally I think the least bothersome way is to use the patch for unified font sizes, followed by sideloading everything as kepubs. Jumping constantly between font sizes is not something I'd want to do. But YMMV.

It's possible. Just don't sync. Download the ePub from Kobo and side load it.

This will solve the problem if he doesn't use the patch to make ePub/KePub the same size.

I create dummy entries in calibre for books I've synced from Kobo. Those entries will allow creating collections, fetching reading stats, etc. into calibre.
