It must be mentioned here that Nickel's EPUB viewer is based on EPUB2, while KEPUB is based on EPUB3. All Japanese eBooks must be converted to KEPUB. There is no doubt that the development team of Japan's Rakuten Group was involved with the KEPUB renderer. It even supports Shueisha's manga EPUBs, which have a special structure. |

The lad's only 12, so I doubt he'll be reading things with footnotes ![]() I have a Kindle, but I keep everything in epub then convert to mobi (because reasons). So hopefully I'll just be able to side load what the boy might like... |

I like that in my kindle too. I noticed the Sage shows the number of pages in a chapter/the book which is neat... |

While the boy speaks and reads Japanese perfectly, he hasn't shown much interest in Manga. We'll see... |

There is no good reason to convert to Mobi. Convert to KF8 instead.

I like to "tidy up" pubs so prefer to get into the html and css and make it "right" so am curious what quirks there are with the kepub format. Seems to be lots of spans and divs for each chapter... |

kf8 doesn't display things correctly. Or rather, I haven't figured out the quirks to make things work properly in the html or cssI'd prefer to use a "higher" format but that's my two bits worth

I've not seen any of these quirks. And I've not read of any of these quirks. What re these quirks? In most cases, quirks are due to the code for the eBook. As for editing the eBook, it's a lot easier to edit ePub then KePub as you don't have to deal with all of the spans in the KePub. This is why it's best to download the ePub and let calibre convert to KePub if that's what you want. |

Most of those spans and divs are added when converting from ePub to kepub. They are mostly used for locations for annotations and highlights. For non-Kobo devices, they are do-nothing code. Some people prefer to convert to ePub and then edit allowing calibre to convert the ePub on the fly when sending to the Kobo device.
