Will I be able to connect USB keyboard to my
LbookV3? (currently with original lbook firmware)

No, you can't connect an external keyboard (why would you want to?).

What I was referring to, was that in the correct context (for example, text searching) an on screen keyboard is available.

It sort of works, but is a little clunky. I'm not sure how the decision to use a matrix to reference keys was made, as this shuts out future and existing devices that don't have number keys. Hopefully further down the track will be an option to choose the keyboard navigation - being able to use a 5-way pad, perhaps even having the choice of using phone-type input with predictive text would be great.

Fantastic progress in a very short time.

Thanks for the feedback re installed vs live OI.

Stability sounds great, and now we have PDF support.

USB support doesn't matter to me - I find it just as easy to pop the SD card out and manage that in a PC; but what about battery charging - does that work correctly?

Thanks

FBReader's find is a long press of number 8. See the 1st two attached scans (at 100 dpi, so lower resolution than the screen).

The 2nd two scans show dictionary lookup in CR3 (press key 2 or use the menu). It does not use the on-screen keyboard but rather a number per 3 characters mapping to the words on the screen. I did not have any dictionaries installed though.

I use the mains adapter with the usb cable for charging, and works without problem.

Dictionaries included in Openinkpot snapshots?

Hello,

1.
I would like to know whether dictionaries are/will be supported in Openinkpot snapshots?

2.
If so which ones are planned and what formats can be used.

3.
I have read somewhere in this forum (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...ght=dictionary) that there exist such a version (thogh I am not sure whether from openinkpot). Is it true?

Thanks for the answers,

bozon42

Coolreader in OI currently has basic dictionary support. The dictionaries are in dict format (http://www.dict.org/bin/Dict), in which there are many nice and free dictionaries available. Very soon I'm going to make a dictionary application, which will likely serve as the main dictionary app for the openinkpot platform. Dottedmag wanted to rewrite in C the libtinydict library that Buggins (the author of coolreader) created, which should be a quick job. I'm just waiting for that to be done in order to make the dictionary app. So yes, we're going to have full dictionary support, and fairly soon.
Cheers!

That is wonderful!!!
I have been hesitating to try the openinkpot firmware but since yesterday
when I tried the live version - which does not change my original firmware -
I am willing to do some more tests with the snapshots.

Features like searching/writing and dictionary were among the first ones my friends asked about when I was boasting about my LbookV3.

These are really important ones.
I am eager to try the dictionaries. Thanks for the link.

Congratulation for the great work!!

Do you mean buttons (which ones?), don't you?

bozon42
See wallcraft's post (#18 this thread). First picture shows the keyboard map image. It maps letters to 2 digit numbers that you enter via the number keys. As far as I know, the search function is currently the only way to bring up that keyboard map image function.

Where can I download the dictionaries? There is a good selection at Formatted DICT Databases, but their ftp site is empty.

You probably already know this, but FBReader has dictionary support on some platforms via an external dictionary program. An abstract external call interface is presented in the file ZLMessage.h.

Hi all,

tried very quickly the live 20090123 OI release.

-
It has interesting features though I had to restart my LbookV3 many times since it was frozen and had to reset it.

-
F.e. I was not able to continue after setting the clock.

-
I could not try CR3 doc (neither the dictionary) - so far I have none.

+
Nevertheless I tried the search function on a russian tale - very helpful function but at the same time funny "T9"-like method to write characters.

For those who have loaded this (20090123) version (not live but via real firmware update) :
did/do you have same problems??

bozon42

PS: Checked the dictionary site (http://www.dict.org/bin/Dict) but cannot use it. :-(

I've been using the live version of OI until a couple of days ago.

It's good enough to demonstrate the capabilities of OI, but I found it *very* unstable, especially in the first few minutes after booting.

If I left the BeBook alone for a while after booting, generally OI Live would be fine, but would freeze if I performed actions too quickly. Performance was also quite slow, though page turning was fine.

The installed version of OI is just fantastic - seems stable, is very responsive, works well. I'm not going back to the previous hacked Hanlin firmware I'd been using (Plucker support is vital for me - OI has this).

I've added some extra fonts and OI does everything I need from it - and it isn't even finished yet :-)

Hello rjh,

thanks for sharing your experience.
It is good to hear that installed version of OI is stable.
1.
What about supporting pdf?
Is it possible to see them correctly? Also without moving them left/right so I can see the whole lines?
Somehow I was not able to achieve this. Maybe I am not accustomed to
new button settings....

2.
What is Plucker support?

Plucker is one of the three ".pdb" ebook formats that FBReader can read. The other two are PalmDOC and zTXT.

PDF support is OK, but I loathe the use of PDF in general for ebooks unless it is used to display graphics-heavy or layout sensitive content. It has no place in ebooks where displays and navigation vary so much between devices.

In OI, there are a number of settings that you can adjust that make viewing PDFs easier. By default the "pan" increment is 50% which for a lot of content means it jumps off one side of the page to the other - try setting the increment to something smaller.

Plucker is a format that is becoming less common unfortunately. The Gutenberg Project used to publish books in it, maybe they still do. It's main advantage for me is that it is an excellent format for converting web pages for offline use, as navigation and links are all preserved. Navigation isn't very useful on the Hanlin V3 hardware (great on my touchscreen devices, though), but I still use it for long articles or where content is published as a single page.

As a format, though, Plucker is a dead end - in that there aren't any good tools for converting from Plucker to anything else. This is a factor that I think should be considered when choosing any format for a library.

However Plucker is still the format that best integrates into my web browsing and online and offline use:

http://hindesite.wordpress.com/artic...book-workflow/

Now that my Hanlin supports Plucker I'm a very happy camper.
